jack's dad: medical. remember how he kept telling jack that he was "different"? or "special"? or that "you aren't built that way, jack" -- or something. i think his dad may not actually be dead. he somehow got jack to australia and on that plane. that's why this is all still a theory.

kate's dad: military. wonder if he had some sort of early tie-in. hanso was supposed to be involved in the military in ww II.

that seems a little unlikely to me, but perhaps. however, henry knows it now so if he ever gets away, they'll know it too (whether or not they believe it). if they're actually running things, then they absolutely know it. and who moved the piece of the swan orientation to the arrow base on the other side of the island?

maybe, but there's a lot of shit that happened that seems way too crazy to arrange.

sayid actually missed his official flight so he could deal with his dead friend's body or something, didn't he? and hurly nearly missed his plane because of an electrical problem in his hotel room. to me, those are factors that would have been dealt with if there was some group managing things. that kind of stuff just screams "fate" to me.

i suppose there's the question of "why them" which is what you're kind of getting at... their parents certainly could have some connection to dharma...

I can't think of a plausible tie with Kate's parents, but with Jack's father being a serious medical professional, there could easily be a tie-in there, even if only on a consultation basis. Maybe that's what drove him to alcoholism?

Edit: Larry beat me to it. And I forgot about Kate's dad being military. Very plausible connection there.

How would they know who would survive the plane crash and who would not? Seems like an awful risky way to get them there. They could have very easily all died in the crash. You might be on to something though:

Jack - dad a big time doctor
    Kate - dad in military
Locke - dad crooked rich guy
Sawyer - "dad" a crook who swindled people (could get caught up in Dharma)
Sun - dad rich korean mafia type
Hurley - dad not really disclosed but Hurley has money and the whole number thing may have drew him
    Saiydeh - military connections
    Charlie - record label?
Claire - fortune teller guy part of Dharma
Boone and Shannon - parents big business types
    Walt - mother big business
    Michael - there with Walt
    Jin - there with Sun

yeah. and they also survived with little injury, to boot. of course, the whole plane might have been filled with them and the crash was part of the experiment.

his dad wasn't a crook. his dad killed his mother because a con man scammed them.

I know what happened to Walt after the others took him. They sold him to NBC and they put him on an episode My Name is Earl.

Yes i did mean Desmond earlier, I don't know why I said SPencer. Although he did about as breif of sceen on 24 as the german operative a few weeks ago (his name there may have been Spencer).

Anyway a couple people mentioned the Latin Phrases, according to the website I got the map off of here is what they mean:

Aegrescit medendo - The disease worsens with the treatment. The remedy is worse than the disease
Sursum corda - Lift up your hearts (to God)
Credo nos in fluctu eodem esse - I think we're on the same wavelength
Malum consilium quod mutari non potest - It's a bad plan that can't be changed.
Cogito ergo doleo - I think therefore I am depressed
Ut sit magna, tamen certe lenta ira deorum est - The wrath of the gods may be great, but it certainly is slow
Hic sunt dracones - Here be dragons
Nil actum credens dum quid superesset agendum - Don't consider that anything has been done if anything is left to be done
Liberate te ex inferis - Save yourself from hell
Mus uni non fidit antro - A mouse does not rely on just one hole

Other things that interested me were the words Caduceus and Cerberus on the left hand side of the map. Both are Greek mythology words, one being a three headed watchdog and the otherA caduceus (kerykeion in Greek) is a staff with two snakes wrapped around it (which would be the hatch Claire was in)

cerberus sounds like a security system -- the black smoke thing, i'm guessing. and like a dog, it smells fear -- eko didn't fear it and locke didn't fear it, so they were left alone.

cogito ergo doleo -- that's awesome.
