Anyone with any thought, especially with Mendenhall - the guy you wanted - still on the board, could see if we wanted a back it made sense to trade down.

SInce this was also the right process for drafting an OT, or drafting a DE, I don't know how people can be more jazzed about "OMG the people that said we shouldn't draft a RB are wrong" than "maybe we didn't make the right goddamned decision".



And no, you don't draft Stewart because of pickups. Just like you don't draft him because he returns kicks.

 

So we are looking at the same OL as last year except we cut Wahle and signed some cast offs from the Rams and Cards. Even if Stewart is healthy I doubt he does much more than Foster did last year.

 

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Mendenhall more like DeAngelo. Between the two RBs available Stewart is more an inside threat

The interior changes. Wharton's inside. the Wahle/Hartwig sieve is gone. RT/RG should run block well, and the blind side should be solid.

Incorrect. They both played in spread offenses and thus both have some question marks about their ability to run between the tackles in a conventional blocking scheme, but of the two Mendenhall was considered to be the more physical back. Stewart is thicker, but likes to bounce things outside and will generally go out of bounds to avoid contact. He's still a really talented RB, but he's not the inside runner some are making him out to be.

 

Having not seen many Pac-10 games, I can't really say I've seen Stewart play much. Sure I've heard the name thrown around in the heisman talk, and I've seen highlights of him, but I don't really have a good feel on him.

What traits does he possess that make him worthy of a mid-first round pick? (not a flame, just a question). Obviously the size/speed is ideal, and he seems to be a supreme-character guy, but does he do anything particularly above average?

 

He has very good body control which allows him to avoid defenders and change direction. It wouldn't be completely unfair to describe him as a thicker version of DeAngelo, although somewhat less explosive. Both can run inside, but neither particularly likes to.

 

Not really what I wanted to hear, but pretty much what I expected.

What's the primary difference between him and Mendenhall? I know their measurables are somewhat similar (Stewarts thicker, Mendenhall a hair faster) but what would Mendenhall have brought to the table that Stewart doesn't, and vice versa?
