    At least after May's workout, the Bobcats didn't tell him to go back to college, "which I was planning to do all along anyway".

    CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Bobcats worked out high schooler Gerald Green, and despite struggling through the end of the grueling audition, he still managed to impress the coaching staff Wednesday.

    Charlotte may be interested in taking Green with the No. 5 pick in the NBA draft, said Bobcats coach Bernie Bickerstaff, who has repeatedly expressed his preference for college players.

    "He's by far the best athlete that we've had in here," Bickerstaff said.

    Green, a 6-foot-8 shooting guard from Houston, made Charlotte his first stop on the NBA tryout tour. Many players have said the team stages the toughest auditions in the league.
    Bickerstaff can't see the wisdom in a player working out alone for the Charlotte staff because of the intensity. Players competing in a group can catch their breath during quick breaks.

    But a solo workout can test a players conditioning and mental strength. Green was clearly in pain the final 10 minutes, grimacing as he ran the length of the court, then folding over to catch his breath between free throws.

    When it was finally over, he laid down on the court for several minutes to recuperate.

    Bickerstaff said a solo audition is actually worse on the player because he gets fewer breaks.

    The Bobcats stage particularly grueling workouts where players' agility, endurance and shooting are tested at once.

    North Carolina center Sean May didn't complete a solo workout for the Bobcats because it was so exhausting.

    "I don't know how much wisdom (there is) in coming in here" alone, Bickerstaff said.

    "If you go back and look at Sean, I'm sure he wanted some company."
