Don't you have to be 65 to go on SSRI?

I'm saying that ACE has never met her and assessing her and telling her she does not need to be on meds from a layman's point of view is unsafe and she should let a mental health professional make the decision- not someone from here who doesn't know shit about mental health.

For people with TRUE major depression, SSRI's are a miracle drug.

I'm far from a shrink but I've been a psych nurse for 20 years and am certified as a clinical specialist in psych and mental health by the ANCC. I've worked in a state hosptial with some of the craziest fuckers in western NC and seen some shit that would make you piss yourself. So yes, I do feel more knowledgable on the topic.

I'm far from a cheerleader for SSRI's. The side effects suck. But it beats the option- misery.

Lithium is a body salt used as a mood stablizier- not an antidepressant.

I don't know SD+, but if she is THAT unhappy and a mental health professional thinks she needs to be on meds, I think she should give it a try. I've watched people so depressed they would sit in a chair 24 hours a day- piss and shit themselves and not eat. After 4 weeks on a SSRI, they were up walking, talking and laughing at TV sitcoms.

When someone is in that deep of a fog, the risk of feeling 'spacy' for a few days is worth the risk is there is even a 1% chance to recover.

    I'm lost...
Fred, you're right. I'm not a professional and in no way would I ever claim to be. And I have little to no experience dealing with people with mental illness. But IMO, 99% of the people that are prescribed drugs like these (and others for that matter) don't need them. And since SD+ came here asking to talk about them, I felt that my opinion would be just as welcome as any other asshole who isn't a professional on the subject.

YES... I realize that there are probably MANY people that can benefit from the drug(s). But it is my perception that SD+ is generally a happy sort of person based on her posts/threads here on TBR always talking about things she's been doing and things she has accomplished..... She seems to me like a far cry from someone who would "sit in a chair 24 hours a day- piss and shit themselves and not eat".

She's grown up, and is pefectly capable of deciding what she wants to do about the situation. But if she comes here asking for advice, or asking for others OPINIONS on a subject, then she's gonna get them.

Point taken. From from my semi-professional opinion, the % is only about 50. And having been there- I can honestly say it is worth the risks.

I took Levitra and now I can throw a football through a tire swing.

It's good to be back in the game. :satana:

Seriouly though, my wife has suffered depression and pretty bad anxiety for over 10 years. She hasn't really tried any of the meds for very long because she has a huge anxiety over taking medicine. She's had two MAJOR back surgeries and is not yet 30 and the only meds she took afterwards to cope was 1 advil.

Her anxiety and panic attacks were the real problems. I think the depression was just a side effect of that.

Yeah, I agree there are tons of people that don't need the stuff but get prescribed it anyway but don't think that they don't help a very large group of people.

She is doing great today and has been for a couple of years about a great deal of thearpy and every self help book known to man.

I also think that she grew out of some of it if that's possible. Our lives have changed over time and weither it be our environment, income, a new baby or whatever she copes a lot better.

In the end do whatever fills that hole and makes you feel normal.

Just wanted to update ya guys and gals. I started taking Zoloft on Friday, and so far I don't have any side effects, or feel any different. I'm on a really low dose though b/c the psychiatrist wants to start me off slow. I'm a little calmer I think, and I feel that this is working out. I'm thinking that those who really don't need this type of stuff might get more side effects than those who do really need it. I mean if it's fixing the problem in the brain, then there really shouldn't be that many side effects. But who knows. Anyhow, thought i'd let yall know.
