I heard that lexipro *sp* has near to none side effects. Personally i've tried pot in the past and it made me more anxious and depressed. I am glad it's illegal.

I know why Meat felt like shit when he was taking them, because if you aren't really depressed and you take them then it will definitely make you feel worse. - For instance, the drug they give children called Riddilin *sp*.. it is supposed to be an upper, but when given to hyperactive children that have ADD, it makes them calm. I'm naturally always high energy, so whenever I take coffee, or anything with caffiene, I am naturally relaxed..

Do we have an 'applause' smiley?

I absolutely hate the idea of doctor's doing nothing but prescribing meds for every little thing in the world. It's one thing to take something here and there to alleviate some symptoms you may have, but to take meds that alter your bodies ability to function on its own????? That shit is just wrong.

SD+... IMO, it's something in your life that is causing this 'depression'. Cure it the right way by figuring out what that problem is and then work on it. Don't just take meds that will do nothing but blind you of what the true problem is.

Ace- you've apparently never been on SSRI's, don't know SD+ and have no mental health background and probably very little personal experience on the topic. Am I correct?

Are you saying that you know her? What I read earlier is that you think the water supply should be spiked with it. So - it doesn't matter whether you know her, you think she should get on the meds.

Are you qualified to diagnose her as needing the meds from information obtained on a message board? I don't see how you are any more qualified than anyone else - you're just a cheerleader for SSRI's. I think that's great - I have 2 friends who I think had their lives saved by them. I also know about 50 who had uneventful experiences, negative experiences, or ineffective experiences with them. The 2 that still take them were actually clinically depressed. The others just got sold the stuff.

Another thing - I get the feeling that terms such as 'Generalized Anxiety Disorder' are bascially coined for the sole purpose of developing and marketing a medication for, and having a classification with in the health field for the 'Generalized' disorder, thereby opening the door for widespread insurance coverage of meds for the 'generalized disorder'. SD+ - I'm not AT ALL saying that you don't have this, or that you aren't depressed, or that you haven't been through alot. I just don't believe the whole concept of neatly packaging a vague human condition and then - miraculously - a pill that happens to cure that! And insurance pays for it!

I guess I just don't trust the hype.

The scary thing about the prescribing of SSRI's is that everyone who has read this thread probably knows me better than the doctor that scripted them to me. I shouldn't be surprised, as I could likely have multiple scrips for whatever I want by the end of the day, if I tried hard enough.

I will say this - there's very likely no harm done in trying them, other than a big increase in insurance premiums. If you're OK with that risk, and you happen to actually need them, I've heard some great stories about their effectiveness. I have one friend who now gets to live because of them, and it's very cool. He was bat-shit fucking crazy, couldn't leave the house, had salt stains on his face from the constant seeping tears. They fixed it within days, and that was a half dozen years ago. His mother is on lithium and shit, and has been committed, so he was likely genetically predisposed to a legitimate mental illness.

Serious depression also runs in my family, and it's always gone untreated, which I think is another reason I was curious enough to try them. My grandfather quite literally spent the last 20+ years of his life living on the couch. I saw him leave the house twice in my lifetime, he pissed in a jar, didn't bathe ever, and just stayed on the couch. Slept there, ate there, lived there. Big long fingernails. Noone ever questioned that. So - I could see myself having a genetically predisposed 'potential' towards something like that, and after watching my friend have such a dramatic increase in his quality of life, figured it was worth a shot.

For once I agree with Ace 100%. I've known too many people who have become dependent on these things.

To be honest, I'm not one of these people who likes the idea of Insurance companies greed and Doctors just handing out pills like candy. If anyone here knows what I've gone through over the past few years, its been like hell, ups and downs, plus even before that starting in 2001 I started getting really bad panic attacks to the point where I thought I was dying everytime.

I so hate the fact that I am in this situation and lately I've been thinking a lot about my pasts and decisions, etc. wish I would have done a lot of things differently, but I'm here now, making a positive decision for myself and my future. I don't want to have to stay on these things forever, and I pray they really do work to re-align things so to speak.

I'm on my way out the door to this mental health clinic now, so when I get back I'll let yall know what the outcome is. I've never tried any type of treatment before, so this will be an interesting experience and I know it will take a few weeks to see if there is any change in my mental well being.

To me, there's nothing better than a nice big glass of SSRI with a frothy head.
