    i STILL do.

it's probably irrational, but when my father-in-law visits (and i'm at work) he has fox news up all day. i swear when i change the channel i can see a black strip at the bottom where the crawl lives.

but i was a freak about burn-in fear when i got mine, too.

i'm guessing it's his signal. directv's sd signals are absolute crap. their sd signal when uncompressed is 480x480 for crying out loud, so you know it's not gonna be very good. can't imagine they treat hd much better.

It's not totally irrational depending on the age of your set. An older set will always be potentially vulnerable to burn-in. This problem has been mostly eliminated from newer sets after the break-in period. Except for extreme situations like a paused screen (most have built-in screen shrinker/movers to help prevent burn in if that happens) for 10 hours or like you said any channel with a crawl/ticker.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. Cable compresses their channels but DTV does so even more. My buddy has DTV and a 50 inch plasma, and I always thought my panel must be better than his as everything is sharper. Now I think it's his service. Still, he has access to a fuckload of hd channels. I'm jealous.

Looks like the exact same one I have.

Unfortunately, I haven't watched anything in HD on it in ages. Chose the Directv DVR receiver over the HD. Paying several hundred bucks for the DVR/HD receiver was rediculous.

Are you still under contract? If not, call them up and tell them Dish is offering you a free dvr/hd receiver for switching and DTV will give you theirs for $100 if you sign a new contract.

i dunno if cable companies re-encode or just pass thru what they're given. directv, on the other hand, takes the signal and not only re-encodes it, they actually scale it down. 1440x1080 is their 1080i format. their 720p format (assuming they don't just convert everything to 1080i) is likel 960x720 if the 33% reduction in size holds true. that's the formula they used for their sd signals, too. 480x480 instead of 640x480 (which itself is already less than digital ntsc which is 720x486).

the ironic thing is that ota is the best signal you can get (if you can get it). all the cables and satellites and all that gadgetry and you get a lesser quality signal than the modern day rabbit ears.

Current gen Kuro in near pitch black room on the left, currently the best flat panel plasma available, heralded for it's black levels.

Next gen Kuro on the right. Amazing is plasma, 9mm thick.
