Yeah, I was going to mention CRTs but it's pretty pointless because Sony just stopped making the last of the hd crts. Plus, some people get upset when you bring up CRT in an LCD V Plasma discussion.

It's worth noting though that CRT is still currently the best HD display money can buy, and on top of that it will display your SD channels and content flawlessly. A lot have geometry problems that can be corrected, and as a tech they can only display 1080i. They also weigh as much as a small planet.

But picture-wise they can't be beat. You can find good used ones on Craigslist all the time from people who don't want to move them lol.

Yep, I have to make a decision soon as to which way I want to go. I have regular cable now but don't really like Comcast. I've heard Fios is good but it's not available yet and then there is Direct TV. I'm leaning towards Direct TV but I need to run the numbers first.

it's been a while, but aren't night games pretty much abc and espn? cuz they're both 720p. could be the diff you're seeing.

that's something that harry is not factoring in when saying 768 can't look better than 1080p. fsn, espn, abc -- all 720p. 1080 doesn't do anything but add scaling artifacts.

Stop it. Seriously. I like you Nut, but you guys are arguing just to argue.

#1, 720p isnt 768p. Both in resolution and in frame rate. On top of that, all of the signals are converted to 1080i at the providers source. So no matter what, there is always at least one conversion, and oftentimes more, and EVERY TV CONVERTS these broadcast sources to their native display resolution & framerate.

#2, Compression artifacts exist indpendently from the TVs. The TVs have nothing to do with them.

#3, and you know better than this Nut, I said it's no better, which means SAME. DJ "MY TV IS BETTAR THAN URS CAUSE I AM TEH SMARTESST" Tet was the one who made the asinine remark that his was TEH BATTAR. Performance is so source driven when you're talking about displaying a broadcast signal, that it's absolutely idiotic to make claims about the sets. Which, by the way, is why I speculated that a demanding public and eager marketers might do some crazy shit like 60 fps movies (as I pointed out, TV shows are now often being filmed at 30 or 60 fps), if it lets them charge more $. It was supposed to be a cynical jab at faux innovation, not fucking nostradomas.

#4 Arguing over this shit is ridiculous. You don't drink coke because pepsi is "inherently flawed" (not unless you're a douchebag), you drink it because you prefer the taste. Same thing here.

Warner went BluRay exclusive about an hour ago. The format war should be over soon, thank god.

And I say that as someone who only owns an HD-DVD player.

Oh, and lmao at tv performance being purely content driven.

I never said my tv had more resolution, it obviously doesn't. All I said was all things considered, resolution is just one piece of the visual puzzle. A lot of experts (not just myself) prefer the color depth provided by the much superior black levels of plasma, as well as their superior response time leading to less lag (as shown by those tiresome DLP commercials.) Lack of color depth and slow response time leads to compression artifacts shown in fast moving scenes, such as the football crowd that Harry was complaining about earlier (which all of a sudden is picture perfect.)

I'm sure his tv looks great. I'm just as sure that most of you would prefer mine.

edit: Actually, you bring up a very good point against plasmas. Because they all (until recently) were 768p, that means EVERYTHING you watch is being scaled. The scaler is one area where cheap plasmas can pinch, so if you're going plasma, I wouldn't bother with anything that isn't Pioneer, Panasonic, or Samsung. Since everything is being scaled, that's a very important piece. Pioneer iirc is starting to license their scaler to other companies, it was considered head and shoulders above anything else in the market at the time.

Since I watch a lot of Bobcat games, getting a flat panel that displays standard def content well was a necessity. Most flat panels look like crap with SD material, and honestly, mine doesn't look all that good. But it's better than my old dying 1988 crt lol.
