I just bought a 46 inch LCD. If I had gone 50 inches + I would have gone Plasma. I got tired of reading crap and just bought the damn thing.

Hi. My name is Harry. I am a broken record...

IF - you need an all around unit that can be used to play video games, as a computer monitor, will be featured in a brightly lit room, or where it will be directly lit via a window, and runs a little cooler and is generally lighter, then get an LCD. They are superior for everyday, all around use.

IF - You are purchasing the screen primarily to watch movies, and in a dark room (one with no windows that might cause glare on the screen), buy a plasma. They are superior as true home theater screens.

IF you buy an LCD - try to stick with: Samsung, Sharp, Toshiba, Sony, and maybe LG

If you buy plasma - try to stick with: Pioneer, Panasonic, & Samsung

If the screen size is >= 42" go ahead and get a 1080p unit if it is affordable. < 42" 1080p is nice, but really not necessary. Most of these TVs have 1366x768 resolution which is sufficient for the screen size to produce a crisp clear picture.

People argue too much about which is technologically better without considering which is better for their needs.

But isn't the built in shelf life like 6 hours a day for 26 years or something. By that time there is no telling what we will be watching...

makes a lot of sense, my 37" LCD Protron in 720i and i could be happier with it... it's just a bedroom tv and it blows away the 27" tube that was in there... just got the 46" Samsung LCD and it's 1080p, it looks fantastic

i didn't want the plasma, i have a lot of light in the room and glare on the screen drives me cravy... i saw a panasonic with the anti-glare screen and it was amazing how one looked like a mirror and this one you couldn't hardly find one light in the showroom... but i ain't paying that much more when i can just go LCD

i think the best plasma has a better picture than the best lcd though

When we were shopping around, I found that the Plasmas were too murky, and I didn't like their picture up close.

Factor in the fact that we were moving in a year, which has a possibility of drastically shortening the life of a plasma and that we intended to use the TV pretty regularly and it was a no-brainer for us.

The knock on LCDs is the litebrite effect, but I haven't seen a TV burnout yet.

Plasmas are used all the time for video games, computer monitors (Media Center anyone), etc. They have great anti-glare coatings, and with a great 50" going for $1250, you can't argue price... The real difference to me is that LCD's tend to be a little brighter and plasma's have better blacks. Black display matters more, but the real difference is LCDs are available in small sizes (32"-42") at good price points, while plasmas are great at mid-to-large sizes (50"+).

I had a 37" LCD for a while, tuned in my house connected to my sources over the same cables my plasma was hooked to, in a room with a lot of windows, and it was just as bad on reflections and not as good a display by a long shot (colors felt washed out in comparison, like the brightness was turned up too much). And that was in comparison to an old 50" plasma (3 years old).

Most on-line resources agree that 1080p is only good if you are extremely close to your smaller screen, or have a very large screen. For 60"+, 1080p is good. Smaller screens, like a 50", viewed at a normal distance of 10' or more, you won't be able to see the difference between 1080p and 720p. You typically spend a lot more to get that 1080p and source material is still pretty limited, so unless you're getting a HUGE TV or viewing it from insanely close distances, save your pennies and buy another TV in a few years that's both larger and with the higher res and whatever other new gadgetry is available then instead of doing it now...

Got a 50" above the fireplace, and I agree.
