I don't know what dumars is doing here. the rumor is the pistons didn't think larry was healthy enough to coach a full season.

then again, a couple of years ago people thought he was crazy for firing carlisle.

I thought he wanted to go to Cleveland too.

AUBURN HILLS -- It's impossible to pinpoint the breaking point in the relationship between Larry Brown and the Pistons.

Safe to say, though, that these are some of the key moments.

    • Jan. 29, 2005. Brown is quoted in New York papers as saying that coaching the Knicks was always his dream job. He didn't retract that for two days, while his players and team officials smoldered.

    • March 13, 2005. After a game against Utah, Brown announces he will undergo a second surgery, this one on his bladder. He would miss the next 11 days, keeping the Pistons wondering not when, but if, he would return.

The Pistons had hoped that Brown would have the surgery during the All-Star break. They also were perplexed that he could run practices but not coach the games.

    • May 25, 2005. The New York Times reports that Brown has had discussions with the Cavaliers about becoming their president of basketball operations.

He wouldn't make a clear and concise denial for six days.

    • July 11, 2005. Brown and his agent meet with Bill Davidson and Joe Dumars. Davidson gives a forthright account of his feelings toward Brown and some of his actions.

Brown tells Davidson and Dumars for the first time that he is healthy enough to coach and plans to be at training camp. But he never assures them he could hold up for the entire season.

The Pistons respond by offering Brown an executive scouting position. Termination discussions began almost immediately thereafter.

the odd thing is that the Pistons let him talk with the Cavs .....

apparently its not so much Dumars as it is the owner Davidson who wants Larry gone....Larry wants to get paid too

i think there were some mixed feelings about brown this year. some players didn't like some stuff that went on with brown. the cleveland talk and the new york talk. brown's ALWAYS been this way -- daydreaming about his next job.

i think dumars and davidson probably sorta wanted him to go so they could at least control the situation a bit and not have him decide to quit midway thru the season or even next year when they might not be able to land another good coach. right now, they can probably get flip saunders. next year? who knows who'll be available.

i think they asked him to make an impossible assurance -- that he'd stay healthy thru the season. they knew wishwashy brown wouldn't be able to make that promise. i don't think he necessarily wanted out, but then a contract buyout and the freedom to coach the knicks is probably appealing to him.

i hope he doesn't end up with the cavs. i hope that was just speculation cuz that would really suck. danny ferry's been doing a great job and i think brown would just muddy the already potentially confusing chain of command in cleveland.
