CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Well-traveled Larry Brown has reached an agreement to return to the NBA as coach of the Charlotte Bobcats, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press on Monday.

The person, speaking on condition of anonymity because an official announcement has not been made, said Brown was expected to sign a contract on Tuesday. The Bobcats have called an afternoon news conference for what they termed a "major basketball announcement."

    Fast Facts

    • Larry Brown was inducted into the basketball Hall of Fame as a coach in 2002.

    • In an NBA career that has accumulated 1,010 wins and 800 losses over 23 seasons, Brown won one championship -- in 2003-04 with the Pistons.

    • As a college coach, Brown took UCLA to the NCAA championship game in 1980 and won it all with Kansas in 1988.

    • Like Bobcats part-owner Michael Jordan, Brown played under legendary coach Dean Smith at North Carolina.

    • He played five seasons in the ABA and coached in the league four more.

    -- ESPN Research

The 67-year-old Hall of Famer will be taking over his ninth NBA team, and it will be his first coaching job since a messy exit from the New York Knicks in 2006. Brown will replace Sam Vincent, fired on Saturday after going 32-50 in his one season.

    Reached early Tuesday

It a PR move by the Bobcats. As well as great move as far as getting one top Coach in the NBA.I bet if the Bobcats stay Healthy they can make the playoff in 09 and maybe even a deep run in the Playoff. As They say What Can brown do for you

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm, I wonder if Billy Cunningham will come back as an assistant coach :) ? ? ? ? ? ? He does have a ring (76ers-1983). Can never have enough Chapel Hill Mafia members in the Bobcats front office   !!!!!!

Great hire. I'd love to see Brown bring in Paul Silas as an assistant/heir apparent.

edit: because we all know Brown is already forming his exit strategy

LB wont coach more than a couple of years but who cares. This team needs to get headed in the right direction and Brown is the man for the job.

his mother and two of his daughters live in Charlotte...

    23 seasons, 8 teams, 1 championship

The guy averages less than 3 years per team.

What is so great about this guy?

he will leave that team in better shape than he got it. hes not going to be there forever but he brings them instant credibility as far as coaching. Bobcats will be his 9th NBA job and hes lead 7 of those teams to the playoffs.

He is a much better coach than Sam Vincent. UNC alum aside I think he is a good move for this franchise.
