I went to log on last night and it kept saying 'little or no connectivity.' I shut everything down, unplugged everything and let it sit a hour. Then rebooted and tried again- the same results. Then when I pulled the internet cord out of the back, I got a thing saying "a network cord is unplugged.' So when everything is hooked up, it's getting SOME sort of signal.

The TV cable is working fine. I'm not using a wireless hookup.

I called Charter and was on the phone for over a hour and he said it seems the modem and laptop are not communicating and he thinks it's a network card.

This morning, I booted up and COULD get on the internet, but it was slooooooow!

If it's a network card, does it come and go like that?

I dropped it off at a shop for them to check out and they were supposed to call by 5. It's 630pm now.

Little or no network connectivity means it sees the cable is plugged in (on both ends), but you aren't getting an IP address. Normally, if you are using a cable modem attached via ethernet network cable to your PC, you would get your IP info from a time warner DHCP server. So, this means Time Warner was having some sort of problem with their internet service (which is totally separate from your cable signal at some point down the line, so you could have TV but not internet easily).

It could come back up and be slow if Time Warner was again having some sort of issue. And this issue could be something like a squirrel chewing a cable - not enough to hose cable TV, but enough to hose internet connections... I've seen that several times, talking to power and cable folks it's supposedly very common for a squirrel to get fried and take down power or chew into cable stuff... Anywho, you're pretty likely to find that your PC is just fine, no need to take it into the shop.

The Charter guy said he saw the modem on line but it was not sending signals to the laptop. He had me do test after test via phone and finally said he thought it was the netword card. ?? But my cable TV service is working fine so I don't think a critter got ahold of anything.

He also said Charter was not having any reported problems in the area and my neighbors internet is working fine.

I miss the lightning speed it use to have. Over the last few weeks, it has been taking longer and longer to boot up.

    Thanks for the info.

Do you notice a slower speed when it's raining or wet outside? That could be their issue. However, it is probably the network card. I have had two that crapped out for no reason.

Longer and longer boot times recently around the same time you're seeing bad performance...interesting. That's a hint for sure of something local.

It's VERY rare to see a network card just go bad, but it does happen. You should try a new network cable. It's conceivable you have rolled a chair over it or something, and a bad cable can cause all KINDS of strange stuff.

You might want to do a thorough virus check on your box - connecting directly to the internet means you are totally relying on your PC firewall to protect you from the constant attacks (sitting behind a NAT/router prevents a lot of that).

I run Nortons and Ad Awarew weekly- no problems there.

I changed the cable cord to see if that was the problem.

It has been running slow the last week or so; doesnt vary with the weather.

I had no connectivity with my internet a couple of weeks ago. They ended up replacing all of the cable line into my apartment from the cable box. Said the cable line was bad and wasn't taking in the correct amount of signal or something like that.

I'd make Charter bring out a new cable modem, then you'd know.

Had the same kind of problem, but my cable was split so many times the signal was weak and also the splitter connector thingy was old and didn't let enough info pass through. It's always something.
