He said I am not big enough for the lap band and he does not want to put me on any meds for weight loss or a liquid diet or anything. He said the weight would just come back as soon as I stopped it.

He suggested I go back to Weight Watchers and start exercising. Same old Same old really. I guess I am just not fat enough to get medical help.

NEW ORLEANS -- Walking briskly for almost an hour daily or doing other regular physical activity is the key to losing a lot of weight and keeping it off, according to a large body of research, including a study released here at the annual meeting of the Obesity Society. It may be because this amount of activity suppresses appetite, relieves stress, allows people to cheat a little on their diets and replaces time spent eating, says John Jakicic, director of the Physical Activity and Weight Management Research Center at the University of Pittsburgh. He and his colleagues presented several exercise studies.

In one, the researchers worked with 170 overweight and obese women for two years. Participants were given instruction on improving their eating habits, encouraged to increase physical activity by 150 to 300 minutes or more a week and received telephone calls at least twice a month from health professionals offering guidance and encouragement.

Some women were able to lose 5% and 7% of their weight by changing their eating habits but not exercising a lot more. But those who lost 10% or more of their starting weight -- an average of 31 pounds -- and kept it off for two years changed their eating habits and did an additional 50 minutes a day above what they were doing at the beginning of the program.

They burned about 2,000 extra calories a week, Jakicic says. Most walked fairly briskly at a pace of about 3 to 31/2 miles an hour, he says. "It's not strolling. It's walking as if you're going to miss the bus."

Jessica Unick, an exercise researcher at the University of Pittsburgh, says the women who lost 10% of their body weight did so in the first six months of the program, and one of the reasons they were able to keep it off is because they maintained their high levels of physical activity.

When people first start a weight-loss program, they are often very compliant, but as time goes on they eat more, Jakicic says. "Exercise gives people a little more wiggle room on calories."

There is some evidence that exercise is an appetite suppressant, he says. "People who exercise report feeling less hungry throughout the day. If you feel hungry, and go for a walk, then you may not feel hungry anymore. After I take a run, I don't feel like eating for a while."

Also, people may exercise when they otherwise would be eating. For instance, if you split your lunch hour between a walk and eating, you may eat less, he says.

In another study of almost 5,000 overweight, type 2 diabetics, Jakicic found that cardiovascular or aerobic fitness -- the capacity to walk briskly or climb the stairs -- increased by 20% for those who did 175 more minutes a week of physical activity above their baseline activity level.

This study shows they could improve their fitness with an extra 35-minute walk five days a week, Jakicic says

One of the biggest reasons most people don't exercise is they don't plan for it, he says; people think physical activity just happens, and it doesn't. "You have to know what you're going to do if the weather is bad or you are late getting the kids off to school."
