Anyone ever have them? What do they feel like when they are coming on? I know they are supposed to be very painful if you have an attack but is it all the sudden or does it come on gradually?

Can happen both ways. The most typical presentation is flank pain (back and side radiating down). Sometimes you have problems peeing and blood in your urine. But- I've seen them present in all sorts of ways from belly pain in the front to testicular pain.
Here's hoping you don't have one even though even though you are a mean repub :)

I have had back pain on one side that comes and goes. Sometimes I will have a little pain urinating too. It has never got very bad and has went away on its own. My back is hurting pretty bad today though. I do not remember lifting anything that would cause it to hurt.

My wife says the pain is too high on my back. It must be a muscle strain.

How high is it? Your kidneys sit about at the level of the bottom of the ribcage. Put your hand on the curve of your ribs and follow it around to your back. Is it there or below?

Mine started out as back pain. It was during the summer and I was helping out at Vacation Bible School and thought I had just hurt my back picking up so many kids. It continued to get worse until I couldn't stand it anymore. Someone told me it might be kidney stones and I went to a uriologist (sp) and sure enough it was. Worst pain I've ever had in my life. At one point I seriously thought I was going to die. I thought no one can be in that much pain and live to tell about it.

I sort of got mad at my doctor because he kept wanting me to pass it and I never did and I was in a hellava lot of pain. He finally did some kind of outpatient surgery to get rid of it. I just wish he would have done that to start with.

It is higher than the bottom of my ribcage. I sweet talked my wife into a back rub last night and that helped. I could feel that it was a muscle when she did that. It surprised me that a muscle could hurt like that. I guess it was just in the right place. Everytime I would breathe I could feel it. It is better today.

Hopefully I do not have kidney stones, although I have had symptoms in the past that made me think I might. I guess I need to start drinking more water.

i had one a few years ago. started off thinking i had to take a crap, but then decided something was wrong. i thought kidney stones or apendix. hurt enough for me to be anxious to go the hospital and have them cut me open if need be (in the case of apendix).
