From Pat Yaskinas Panthers blog from Charlotte.com . . .

    Why Panthers canned Keyshawn

Here's why Keyshawn Johnson is gone:

Although the receiver, who was followed by controversy in his previous stops, seemed to be a model citizen in his one season with the Panthers, there were some-behind the scenes issues.

Some very important people in the organization weren't happy when Johnson failed to stand up and take blame away from quarterback Jake Delhomme after some critical passes intended for Johnson were intercepted. At least one very important person in the organization urged Johnson to do that and he didn't.

Johnson also didn't endear himself to some key people by questioning some coaching moves. The Panthers are on the hook for $3.75 million in salary cap space because of remaining signing bonus prorations. They may designate Johnson as a June 1 cut and spread the cap hit over two years.

The decision to part ways with Johnson actually was made at least several weeks ago. When a rumor was circulating about this move last week, Panthers general manager Marty Hurney told The Observer that information was "not accurate.''

Apparently, the Panthers wanted to make sure their bases were covered before officially making the move, and the clincher came when they drafted USC's Dwayne Jarrett in the second round Saturday.

THE BOTTOM LINE: So, is Jake the 'Golden Boy' of this franchise? Its always the other players fault for missing catches? Yes, questioning coaches in public isn't smart, but then encouraging a player to take the fall vs. the star QB?

The Panthers didn't lose cash when they released wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson. Some media outlets have the team giving him a $3 million roster bonus, but in reality, Johnson had a $1 million roster bonus set for the fall. He won't get that money. He won't get a $1 million base salary. Johnson was a victim of a youth movement. The Panthers drafted Dwayne Jarrett out of USC, and Johnson wanted to mentor him into the NFL. The thought last week was if the Panthers drafted a wide receiver, Johnson would be gone.
It's going to be a tough market for Johnson to find a new home. He's 34. Most of the receiving jobs are taken, and most teams aren't looking for a 34-year-old possession receiver. One possibility could be New Orleans, but the Saints recently signed David Patten as their veteran receiver. Odds are the Saints won't sign him. Johnson's next job could be at the NFL minimum of $820,000, and Johnson might not be interested in waiting for a receiver to get injured in minicamp or training camp just to get the minimum.

In ALL of my dealings with Smith, he has never uttered a negative word about Key in a serious tone of voice, be it on or off the record (read he has joked about Key in the locker room..about his age, mouth, whatever..never anything of a serious nature). This was a front office/coaching staff decision, not Smitty's.

I do not know if Smith is happy or not about the move. I have not spoken to him, and probably won't until training camp (since I will nto be at minicamp this weekend due to the Wachovia Championship).

It's team. Jake just happened to be the guy in the chair.

    ---------------
I've now read five pages of posts. Couldn't believe it when I heard it and knew hell would be breaking loose here by the time I got in.

Bottom line is I was very much looking forward to dumping Colbert but now I have to count on him (vomit).

Whatever happened happened but to think we're better off skill-wise than we were is foolish. Sad truth is that I do believe people who contend that Key was not a positive influence and agree with those who feel he was possibly hurting us as much as he was helping us.

If you're the guy in charge, you're saddled with making a decision that kills us in the short term but is ultimately a necessary decision. Not "going along" takes balls. Fox (or whoever is running the team) has drawn his line in the sand, if it's to be his team it's to be his team under his terms, and I respect that.

I'd like to make better sense but I'm still in shock.

I'm stunned. Agree with what's been written by some here. If he never said my fault for anything, that's not good. All the other starts did. When Smith drops a pass, he says my bad.

While I do think KJ improved us, I was hoping for more from him.

I also agree the will I / wont I play next year drawn out drama probably did not help.

The only reason he was brought here was Henning vouched for him, that he would not be a problem. He wasn't a major one, but with the irritating things, and with the clean the locker room up stance, Henning's being gone may have been a factor, despite what they said. They're always going to say either youth or cap.

I sure hope that Jarrett/Carter, maybe Colbert or one of the TEs can play.

As to the timing, they weren't irritated enough to do this before they had a replacement in Jarrett. (A hoped replacement, anyway.) Why not wait? Curtesy. Any chance he has with signing with someone else gets smaller by the day. Its good for the locker room to be known as a team that helps players on their way out when we can.

Ya know when you’re watching Animal Planet and there’s this baboon in heat . . . and a couple of male baboons start tag teaming her, making her ass even more shinny red and swollen . .. and her tail just sorta stays cocked to the side and busted lookin . . . and she has that “what the hell is going on” look on her face???

That’s what the upper portion of this page reminded me of . . .
