keyboard problem

OK - laptop. I can type fine in notepad apparently. I figured it might be a software thing, but unrelated issues caused a reformat here and it's still there. the problem outside of notepad seems to be that every character typed disappears (like backspace is hit) but nothing happens to suggest backspace is stuck, like IE pages going backward.
I also sometimes get a character or two in before it all highlights (in the IE search bar, for instance), where if I click behind it, the character(s) will go back to normal and won't be highlighted...obviously otherwise, the next keystroke erases the prior character/words/etc
I haven't tried an external keyboard. I would prefer not.
I can't find any jammed keys. No spills. References to jerking off should be appropriately funny or you're just wasting your time.

seriously, an external USB keyboard should help narrow down if it's hardware or software related problem... obviously is it works fine, you would have to assume it's hardware, if it's the same... software JMO
