Didn't Dan Marino "rupture" his achilles? Course he never could move anyway, but he was stiff as a board after. I tore mine when I broke my leg and the bones sliced it partially as they broke, and though it was years ago, that ankle has no flexibility - course I didn't have team physical therapists etc. For more then two years, I couldn't run without pain - I "ran through it", but it HURT bad for the first several yards and then just felt "weird".

An injury settlement is for something like a hammy pull or a sprained ankle. In other words, an injury that will take less than a yesar to rehab. The team pays the player his salary for however long they agree it will take for the player to get well, maybe plus medical expenses (the team may cover the medical expenses separately. I don't know.)

In this case, it will take every bit of Dyson's base salary for him to get well. So there's no advantage to an injury settlement. We're still on the hook for every penny of that base salary. You get hurt on compnay time, the company pays,

He was supposed to be the final piece to this years puzzle

Stocking the roster of any pro sports team is obviously a very high stakes game for riverboat gamblers. Jones and JJ were great at it and Jones is developing a knack for clearing the stables of lame horses. Davis takes a lot of chances but usually seems to have luck on his side. Reeves really slammed it to us in the form of lame horse Chuck Smith. Sometimes you gamble poorly and sometimes you are simply going to have bad luck. It could be argued fanatically (and justly IMO) that we have had more than our fair share of both over the years. Dyson turned out to be a bad gamble but at least all he costs us is a little pocket change this year. The way I am starting to feel is that IF we trade for a WR he better be a decent deep threat and above all else HE BETTER BE DURABLE . . . meaning NO significant injury or medical condition history. The guy we trade for better have a spotless chart! Dyson had a ton of medical red flags and since we weren’t about to offer Chicago a late round pick for injury prone Robinson I can understand why Fox and co chose to roll the dice on Dyson instead. I think the dependable and durable Proehl is going to be worth his weight in gold this year . . . good gamble. There’s got to be some older DURABLE WR with some speed who is itching to be traded to move up the depth chart. I bet our staff has been combing the rosters of every team and hopefully they will make the smart gamble and trade for a solid guy and not wait around for some reject to be dumped. A few things are on our side IMO –

1). Timing . . . It is fortunate that if Dyson was going to break it didn’t happen in preseason. The pickings would be slimmer and the price would be higher. We will have plenty of time to shop around.
2). Our staff has publicly stated the need to acquire a deep threat at WR. They know we have a deficiency there and they were hoping that Dyson would be the missing piece. He’s gone . . . I am confident that they will do what they need to do to (within reason) to replace him.
3). Dyson’s injury history might finally serve as a lesson as to what to avoid in the future. Please let some other teams champion the infirmed for a while. This could influence our guys to reshuffle the roster personnel criteria. Finally both character AND durability could be at the top of the list!
