Guess the Tar Heel fans will be happy to know we are an equal opportunity employer. :D Welcome to Charlotte, Lori!

Women's Basketball Adds Gear McBride As Assistant Coach
As assistant head coach at Seton Hall last season, Gear McBride helped the Pirates to a berth in the WNIT

    From Charlotte49ers.com

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers women's basketball team has added Lori Gear McBride as an assistant coach, head coach Katie Meier announced today.

"We are extremely excited to add Lori to the staff, Meier said. "She's known throughout America and Canada as a tremendous recruiter who upgrades the talent level with each class she brings in. In the interview process, she demonstrated a strong desire to continue to grow in the profession and she has a great opportunity to make a huge impact here at Charlotte. Lori's international contacts and experiences as a player and coach bring an added level in terms of Xs and Os and skill development. I know that the rest of the staff and team is excited to have her aboard."

Gear McBride becomes the newest member of the 49ers' family after five seasons at Seton Hall. Prior to last year, she was promoted to assistant head coach, helping the Pirates earn a berth in the WNIT, the school's first postseason appearance since 1995. She served as an assistant coach for her first four seasons. In 2000-01, her third season with the program, the team posted its first of back-to-back winning seasons. As a member of the Pirates' staff, she was responsible for recruiting, individual workouts with guards and scouting opponents. She also managed the team's outreach program for alumni and fans. While at Seton Hall, she completed her master's in corporate and public communication in May 2000.

Gear McBride began her coaching career after playing four seasons at North Carolina, where she earned a degree in education in May 1997. She was a freshman on the 1994 national championship team and helped the Tar Heels to ACC titles in 1994, 1995 and 1997. As a shooting guard, she scored more than 600 points in her career. A four-time member of the ACC's Academic Honor Roll, she served as team co-captain as a junior and senior. Upon graduation, she played one season for Club Amigo de Basketball in Portugal.

"From the first time I spoke with Coach Meier about the position to my actual hiring, my level of excitement grew with each conversation," Gear McBride said. "This is an amazing opportunity, both personally and professionally, to be part of a program that has done so much in such a short span of time. Having played basketball in North Carolina, this is a homecoming of sorts. I only hope that I can add to the momentum this program has built over the past two seasons."

A native of Quebec, Gear McBride was a member of the 1995 Canadian National Team. She also played on Canada's National Student/Junior Teams from 1992-1995.

Gear McBride replaces Stephanie McCormick, who took a similar position at Georgia Tech earlier this summer.

I saw Coach McBride on campus this morning, giving a tour to a recruit and her family. Looks like she dove right in.

Worth mentioning it, Meier did something no other women's coach had done last season, winning a conference championship and a NCAA bid.

vp, you missed the most important part of the press release... A native of Quebec, Gear McBride was a member of the 1995 Canadian National Team. She also played on Canada's National Student/Junior Teams from 1992-1995.

If you can't be good at who you are, then try and be somebody else.

Twenty bucks says Meier is a better coach than Hatchell. Hatchell can recruit, but she sure as HELL can't coach.
