My brother is a coach with the Panthers. He said Zwick never really showed anything that put him ahead or close to even with of any of the other quarterbacks. He really likes Basanez and his decision making. He said they have a 4th QB, Dalton Bell who is pretty good as well. He has a big-time arm. Ryan Leaf was his quarterback coach in college.

Changing gears.......I ask him over July 4th about the running back situation. He said that Deshaun Foster was in every day during the summer and worked harder than anyone. I guess he is feeling the heat from DeAngelo. Hope he can stay healthy.

Thanks for the input. Basanez does look like someone who could develop into a legitimate backup at worst. And as far as DeShaun is concerned, I think he ran well last year and it's somewhat amusing to see the national people assume that DeAngelo will unseat him.

It's not just national people. There's a boatload of Panther fans that fall in that category.

For the record, I'm not one of them. I may not be the biggest Foster fan, but I think he's better than he gets credit for and I don't see him being unseated so easily (not this season, anyway). The zone blocking should play to his strengths, so as long as he stays healthy I think he has the potential for at least a decent season, if not a pretty good one.

i hope deshaun doesn't swing the ball around one armed for balance or whatever reason this year. i don't know, he has to be smarter about when to die for that extra yard, and when not to because of the ball protection risk. he seems like he gets hit real good a lot too, the way he runs. will the new offense limit that?

Offense probably won't change how he runs, but he runs inconsistently. Sometimes he runs very upright, which was part of his ball protection problem, and sometimes he can lower that shoulder and play to his size.

Plus, his RBs coach hasn't changed, of course.

But, if he's less worried about the cut, he'll probably get through the hole quicker, which might allow him to think more of his inside-the-box technique.

And it's good to see some Foster support. He wasn't spectacular at all, and he wasn't that late 2005 back that JR hoped he'd be, but he was very solid.

DF had an acceptable year. If he can stay healthy and if our line can gel quick enough, this should be his best season. Maybe not a Pro Bowl season, but a solid 1,200 yards would be fine with me.
