Not expecting anything big by any means, but at the very least he provides minutes to rest Zeller and Henson. Plus he's gone after one year. No real loss by bringing him in. Everything he provides is a plus.

I wasn't sure who he was. Might not be the only one.

Even without the Wear Twins, Roy Williams proved he still knows how to rebound.

Alabama transfer Justin Knox committed to the Tar Heels Monday night, adding sorely needed depth to the Tar Heels frontcourt, less than three weeks after freshmen David and Travis Wear surprisingly announced their transfer.

Knox, a 6-foot-8 240-pound post presence who plans to graduate from Alabama this summer, will be eligible to play immediately under the NCAA's graduate student transfer program, so long as he enrolls in a graduate program not offered by his current school.

He averaged 6.3 points and 3.7 rebounds in 19.8 minutes of play for Alabama last season, but repeatedly said he didn't feel as though he was fitting into the system of new coach Anthnoy Grant, who took over the Tide last season. Last week, he announced he had narrowed his choices of transfer destination to ACC schools Carolina and Georgia Tech. According to the terms of his release from Alabama, he was unable to select any SEC school, school in the Alabama system or team the Tide would face in 2010-2011.

For the Heels, Knox provides depth behind expected starters Tyler Zeller, who missed 10 games last season and most of his freshman year in 2009 with injuries, and athletic but thin John Henson. The Tar Heels suffered heavy losses in the post after last season as the graduation of Deon Thompson, departure of sophomore Ed Davis to the NBA and the defection of the Wears turned a six-man rotation into a two man effort.

Knox, who played three seasons at Alabama, has one season of eligibility remaining and will not hamper future recruiting efforts to replace the Wears.

So why doesn't he have to sit out a year? Because he's only used up three years of eligibility and has already graduated, and is entering graduate school?

So why couldn't Greg Paulus play basketball at Syracuse? You get 5 years of NCAA sports but only 4 years in any one sport?

These rules are pretty confusing, strange we're only just recently seeing them executed.

Elliot Williams didn't have to sit out a year last year when he transferred either, but he wasn't in graduate school. He got a waiver from the NCAA to be close to his mother, even though he considered a couple of schools even further away than Duke.

Did anyone know anything about either of those two 'graduate school' rules before last year? I guess having the ability to graduate in three years or play two NCAA sports is fairly rare.

Not really sure by what Carolina fans you've spoke with, but while its news worthy I don't know many "excited" over it. It does help provide depth. Guy won't even be a starter.
