How much of your religious experience is guilt-based?

MOST of my experience with Christianity fits that description. I'm especially curious about the experiences of anyone outside of "traditional" Christianity--eastern religions like Hinduism & Buddhism, for example.

One of the biggest attractions of paganism, to me, has always been the celebration of things that Christianity (in my experience, at least) always condemned--like sexuality & desire & pleasure. Why should all that be BAD?

the symbol of christianity is man nailed to a cross. the over-arching theme is that he's there because of you. if that ain't all about guilt, i dunno what is.

From my own standpoint, very little of my beliefs are derived from guilt. On the contrary the guilt was absolved by the guy nailed to the cross. As for the rest it's mostly dogma added over the centuries and mainly serves to as a personal reference point from which the rest of my existance is derived. People who have no history behave like animals. My faith is a celebration of life although certain factions want to use it as a source of control, for me it is a source of freedom. Where others would stress the communal aspects of the faith, I look at it as a personal relationship between the creator and myself. But then again a woman with her legs spread is fun too.

Why would you feel guilt about a guy nailed to a cross, if you didn't believe in Him?
You must be kidding about pleasure! I think I have one of the most pleasurable lives of most people I know. I make under 40 grand a year, but I do have a home and great adult kids. We like being with each other. We love each other. I think most people are missing the boat on pleasure. At least long lasting pleasure.

Sex isn't bad in the eyes of Christians- just the opposite!! God created sex for our pleasure and to be enjoyed. You just have to play by the rules- within the boundaries of marriage. As long as you're married, have all the sex and pleasure you can handle! :laugh1:

That's not about guilt to me- it's about love. Christ chose to be on the cross because of his love for us. Sure- it would be easy to feel guilty about it, knowing that my sins put him there, but his love and compassion so outweigh that guilt!!

For me, guilt wasn't the draw. I went looking for a source of strength and hope and I found it in God. The guilt did come later, but only because I willingly opened my life up to be compared to God's standards. But that was a good thing. Until then, I was cocky and self-absorbed. Those who knew me then and know me now say I'm a much different person.

    A happier person. :)

We must be living in sin in someone's eyes, 'cause I just don't agree with that.
