    22:48 PT: John Clayton reports for ESPN the Carolina Panthers signed free agent DE Fernando Smith to what is believed to be a one-year, $650,000 contract. He last played for the Vikings and Rams in 2000.

    If I remember correctly, there were supposed to be high expectations for Smith coming out of college.
    For the most part, this is unexciting news, but both could earn spots with the guys we have now?

    My thoughts. Also, in another thread, he's described as being with the Ravens in 2000 - on Del Rio's team. This thread says he was with the Vikes and Rams....

    WOW, that does have a little Chuck Smith ring to it. I didn't realize he was that old, but he has low mileage. As long as the injuy issues are gone and he is in shape, he should give Williams something to sweat about.

    Yeah, but $650 is $650, and it doesn't look like he got a signing bonus.
