It's a special team spot. I hate having 4 spots for guys who only contribute on Special teams, but so be it. If there were 56 players on each team, heck yeah.

 

I hate that they voted down a motion to make 53 spots available without inactives.

 

True, but I think Smith will benefit a great deal working with Bates in practice. And like we said already, Byrd won't be on kick-offs, we've got back-up if Smith or Bates is injured, and Bates is an excellent coverage guy. I think it's a good signing.

 

If we can address our FB and DT needs with similar signings, then that's fine. And I can live with Bates, as long as he doesn't take touches away from Smith. Smith is the future, Bates is just a courtesy.

But then I can't understand Richardson, then. Minor's better, Bates is better, Cooper's much better, all on special teams. So why pay another guy to be a ST player only, when we can develop a hard hitting safety with more speed from the draft?

 

Speaking of which I'm getting the feeling FB may be a position we don't deal with till next year... I mean its REALLY begining to look like its been pushed to the back burner

 

Don't see the point. I'd rather sign a guy that can play D or perhaps receiver AND participate on ST.
