Does anyone else here ever read ESPN's Page 2 stuff?

I've been reading alot of Bill Simmons stuff and the guy is an excellent sports writter, in the conversational sense. That's probably why I am so into his stuff, that was my style when I was a writter. It's just not stuffy enough for most Editors to handle and gets eliminated from far too many publications.

I was reading one of Simmons stories about the NFL and he always drops in movie references and some obscure anticdotes that liven things up. It's like laugh and learn, really.
I wish I had the link, but I read it off of something that was printed out by a buddy at work.
Basically he was talking about the Panthers and Peete being named the starter. In so many words he posed the question, Am I the only one that is waiting for Mushin Muhammad to reenact the opening sceen of The Last Boy Scout and become the first player in NFL history to shoot his way into the endzone then shoot himself. I forgot where I was and busted out laughing, my co-workers thought I was nutts!
If you get a chance to poke around at Simmons scribbles, look for his NFL/Caddyshack Quotes bit, very funny stuff. If I ever find the link I'll post it.

I never liked editing conversational pieces because they pretty much just ramble on about nothing. The problem is that for most people it's not a style - they just don't know any better, so they try to write as if they're trying to convince some dumbass friend. People who have skill do it well.

It's not for everybody, but it's some good light-hearted reading.
I thought this was pretty funny:

<<<I'm praying for the Panthers to win an NFC wildcard, just for the once-in-a-lifetime chance to wager against Rodney Peete, on the road, in the playoffs. I feel like John Cusack traveling to LA in "The Sure Thing"-- giddy, excited, unable to believe that it's actually happening, hoping that the rug doesn't somehow get pulled out.
Seven more wins, Carolina ... come on ... Daddy needs a new pair of shoes>>>

Here is a link to some more if anyone is interested. Mags, I am guessing you'll pass?:D
