Just saw a special on Johnny U and how he got started. He really had a ROUGH start, playing semi-pro for $6.. a game, got cut by the Steelers, and finally picked up by the Colts. The rest is History.
In a interview (old) he said he always KNEW he was a winner and set out every play to prove it. He never worried about bad plays (his first pass in NFL was an interception) just went back to the line and played better. Hed only weighed 160 pounds !!

This is what I saw in Montanna, Young, Marino, Elway, and lately in Tom Brady. The winkster should ldearn from this. YOU can SUCCEEDE, but you have to have the confidence you CAN WIN. Not just occupy space with no idea what to do. Istill think Weinke can got the job done, but he better sure start getting his head screwed on straight.

An Old Coot proud to havde been a Colt fan WAY BACK WHEN !!!  :nopity: :invasion:

I was a Colt fan way back then and I have never forgiven Shula and I still think panty hose wearing Joe Namath suxs.

What most NFL players and men in this world could have learned from Johnny Unitas was how to be a class act in winning and losing in life and on the field.
Men like Unitas will be missed.

For starting what's his face is Super Bowl III I guess.

Jonny U called his own plays, was a true field general. The NFL lost a great ambassador. Our loss, heavens gain.

That's only because you lost a lot of money on that game. Namath was the greatest. And Earl Morrel was the one that got them in the super bowl that year not unitas. But Shula didn't make the same mistake again in 73.

No not that---Morrall was a good back-up against a good team. Johnny U had missed several games and his elbow was shot but he did come in and ran a drive for the only Colt touchdown.

I don't forgive Shula for going to Miami.:(

There was a real nice article about Johnny U I read somewhere. I don't think he could teach what Winky and other non successful pocket passers need to be taught.

Its called "Leadership" - Johnny U commanded the devotion of his team. They believed him and he had an uncanny ability to make things happen. Forget the arm, forget the stats, thats one thing you just can't teach...

Johnny had a few stats under his belt and those were accomplished when you didn't pass on 3rd and 2;)

I know Cleveland will always hate Art Modell but he was a good owner and Baltimore deserves him. Glad Unitas got to see them win a trophy.

Yeah bullshit. Ability overcomes desire any day. when 2 teams are evenly matched I'll agree that the one that wants it more usually wins, but on the whole you can't beat pure atheletic ability. The case in point would be the 71 - 75 Dolphins who were by all accounts mercenary as all hell an showed up to play in between tokes and rails. Against the redskins of that era who had a team chaplin. It was never really a contest Washington usually got steamrolled even though they took the NFC or their division. Griese was not a great leader he was a technician the other guys around him were also very talented, the showed up and played for themselves and each knew that they had to sublimate their desire to showboat in order to get that end of season money.

Can't compare Griese to todays NFL or today's QBs, but then agian this thread was about Johnny U and if he could have taught the Winkster something. My dad has been a Miami fan since they were formed. He'd argue with you. Griese was a great leader and yes he some very good talent around him.

The point is, not all "technicians" will be successful unless they have a "natural" ability to inspire their team. Leadership means showing by example and actually performing... "Backing what they speak".

The following guys have some very good skills, some were/are pocket passers, some are mobile. Montana, Young, Elway, Aikman, Farve, Marino, Kelly. These guys consistently demonstrate(d) throughout their careers, the ability to win games in the 4th quarter. Their coaches will tell you they made people around them better.

Its the same in the real world, there are leaders/bosses that will inspire you to do your best, there are people that will do their best because that is their make up, but they will do even better when the right person is leading them and challenging them to improve.
