Duhon; one of the few exceptions to the Dook/NBA curse, but give him time, he may get in a car accident, that seems to be the exit of choice for those guys.

Freshman class already makes its mark in ACC

    By Ed Miller
    Landmark News Service

North Carolina freshman basketball player Brandan Wright reminds some people of a young Kevin Garnett. To others, his 7-foot-4 wingspan and silky left-handed moves evoke another long-armed lefty -- former Tar Heels great Sam Perkins.

Either way, at 6-feet-9 and 205 pounds, Wright oozes the type of potential that likely would have made him a lottery pick in last June's NBA draft, had the league's new minimum age not made him ineligible to be selected.

"I would pick him in a heartbeat," said a scout from a Western Conference team who declined to be identified.

He's not alone. The Web site nbadraft.net projects Wright as the No. 3 pick in next year's draft behind two other freshmen -- Ohio State center Greg Oden and Texas swingman Kevin Durant. Georgia Tech freshman forward Thaddeus Young is projected at No. 19.

All are members of the highly touted high school class of 2006, the first in more than a decade not to have some of its top talent skimmed by the NBA. The class has made its mark across the nation and had a huge impact already in the ACC.

"I don't know that I can ever recall a period of time where there have been so many teams relying on so many freshmen, and those freshmen have performed so well," said TV analyst Dan Bonner.

It's early yet, but four freshmen rank among the ACC's top 20 scorers, four are among the top 17 in rebounding and four rank in the top seven in assists.

Duke, Georgia Tech, North Carolina and Wake Forest have more starts by freshmen than members of any other class. N.C. State's leading scorer and rebounder is a freshman. Wake, Georgia Tech, North Carolina and Maryland have freshman point guards.

"It's an incredibly deep group," Bonner said.

Deep at North Carolina alone. The Tar Heels' class was widely considered the best in the nation and has lived up to the hype. Wright is averaging 15.4 points and 6.5 rebounds and shooting 64.1 percent from the field, putting him on pace to break Perkins' freshman record of 62.6 percent, set in 1980-81.

"Brandan Wright is obviously, at first look, a physical specimen," teammate Marcus Ginyard told the Durham Herald-Sun. "You look at the guy, and you know that there's going to be some crazy things that he can do."

Like pluck alley-oop passes that appear headed over the backboard and slam them home. He's the best of a North Carolina class that includes guards Wayne Ellington, who is averaging 12.4 points, and Ty Lawson, who leads the team with an average of 5.3 assists.

At Duke, four freshmen are in the nine-man rotation, led by guard Jon Scheyer, who averages 11.1 points.

N.C. State forward Brandon Costner, a redshirt freshman, leads the team in scoring (16.0) and rebounding (7.1). At Georgia Tech, three freshmen are in the starting lineup. Young averages 15.1 points and 5.7 rebounds. Point guard Javaris Crittenton averages 13.8 points and 5.2 assists, and forward Zach Peacock averages 7.1 points and 3.1 rebounds.

Wake Forest also has started three freshmen, led by ACC assists leader Ish Smith (6.5). Clemson's Trevor Booker has started every game, and Maryland's Greivis Vasquez and Eric Hayes have shared time at point guard.

"There's so many of them, I don't know how they all could have gone to the NBA," Bonner said.

Most would not have. Even if Wright and Young had opted for the NBA, there still would be enough talent to make this the deepest ACC freshman class since 2000, when Joseph Forte, Jason Williams, Carlos Boozer, Travis Watson and Steve Blake entered the league.

Or maybe 2003, when Chris Bosh, J.J. Redick, Rashad McCants, Raymond Felton and Justin Gray made up the all-freshman team.

Duke probably has better players in the NBA right now than UNC and that's the first time I can actually say that. Boozer has gotta be up there for league MVP this year. Deng is playing awesome and Brand is playing great as well along with other players. Duhon is a lot better than I thought he would be in the pros.

Duke players make the most of any group of alumni in the NBA right now.
