You know I keep bringing this up - maybe Mills is a shitty coach.

I've yet to hear a single defensive player praise Mills for the great defensive season. Not one. I've heard praise for Fox, Del Rio, Trgovac, and even Perry. But not one word about Mills from one player.

I'm not saying he is a shitty coach, but just pointing out that no one seems to care enough about him to give him 'props'. No one.

I can't remember where, but some have said good things. Most people have pimped Del Rio because he's their boss.

And no, Mills isn't necessarily great. I do think he has the tools to be a DC, but he's not likely ready either way.

At least with Mora, we'd get an experienced game planner and most likely a "yes-man" to keep Fox's system intact.

Interesting PFW 'way we hear it'

Insiders say the Panthers were floored when defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio was hired to take over the head-coaching position with the Jaguars. It’s not that they didn’t think that Del Rio was qualified — they knew that he would be a hot prospect when some jobs opened up — but they thought that he wouldn’t get his shot to be a head coach until next offseason. His departure leaves a huge void on head coach John Fox’s staff. Del Rio turned a defense that ranked dead last in the NFL in 2001 into the No. 2 overall squad in the league this past season, but sources say the team isn’t left with any assistants who can be promoted to replace Del Rio. LB coach Sam Mills and secondary coach Rod Perry aren’t considered ready to take on the responsibilities of being a defensive coordinator, and the feeling is that Fox will look to hire from the outside. Regardless of who is brought in, look for Fox to become more hands-on with the defense next season. Fox’s first love is defense, and he will want to be more involved from the start of training camp to ease the transition to a new coordinator. By the way, the respect for Del Rio has been growing for some time. One Ravens insider told a source prior to this season that the departure of Del Rio, who was a LB coach in Baltimore in 2001, was a bigger loss than any free agent who left the Ravens last year. Del Rio maximized the talent of the Panthers’ players, and Fox is hoping that the defense can get over the shock of losing Del Rio quickly next season.

Yep, I basically meant it in a good way...as in hiring a coordinator who won't want to create ripples and implement a different scheme.

I know that asking permission to talk to cocaching staff is basically a formality, but does anyone know what happens if the team with a current contract says no - like what if the Panthers had said no when Jacksonville asked to speak to Del Rio - what then? And what's the purpose of signing a contract (other then players) if you don't have to fulfill it?

Contracts are void if the player will be promoted at the potential job. Had they invited him for the DC position, we could decline. I'm sure the contract had that clause in it - they all do.

I'm not a big fan of his, but I heard great things about him, and the lack of defensive talent in SF, but there's not a lot of choices.

......but one "i'll always be a 49er" comment, and I'll personally come up there and beat the ever lovin shit out of him, and then I'm going after his Dad.
