Bottom line though, if they don't leave Anankin's mother to die on Tattoine then Anakin never turns to the dark side. His visions of Padme's death would not have carried as much weight if not for his visions of his mother's death coming true.

true, but by going back there and basically stealing Shimi from Watto they'd be breaking the Jedi Code.

Go back and pay for her then. Why does the Jedi Code condone slavery anyway?

It doesn't, but taking her by force wouldn't follow their code... you do however make a good point as to paying for her though.

Maybe that is part of the story as Lucas intended. Maybe the Jedi made a lot of mistakes too. Lucas destroyed it and recreated it through Luke I suppose.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when Quigon told Anakin he was leaving with him, didn't he also say that he tried to negotiate for his mother but was unable to get her?

I think he did but it was several years before she died and there was plenty of time to go back and get her.

Yes, but in that time she had been sold again and eventually given her freedom, so maybe they thought there was no reason to try to get her.

I think the real answer though lies in what Yoda told Anakin about learning to let go of the things that he fears losing when Anakin told him about his vision of Padame's death. According to the Jedi beliefs, Anakin is not supposed to worry about his mother's lot in life because she is going to become part of the force when she dies anyway.

She was not sold and freed for a long time. No one among the Jedi seemed to know she was free either.

As for the letting go of attachments etc then why do the Jedi fight at all. Why not just let Palpatine rule? It is all going back to the force anyway.....
