Dee Dee Bridgewater had The Dave Holland big band on, from the Monterey Jazz Festival. Very fine indeed!
Holland was in Chapel Hill a coupla months ago; I found out after the fact.:(

[Dave Holland is of English origin, and plays upright bass, writes and leads his own groups all over the world. He's done free stuff with Ornette Coleman, as well as straight ahead stuff. He's played with just about all the top players, including Miles Davis(rip).]

    Capital City.
Whoever the guy was, he really got down on it. Played a cigar cutter Selmer, said he knew Lenny Pickett back in the day.

You see where Santy Runyon died? I finally checked back and saw that he had. I've talked with Santy a couple of times.
And Jon Van Wie, too. He was a God out there. I got two mouthpieces done by him. Great guy.
That's what I get for not checking back in a while.

Yes. I saw that those guys had passed; sad indeed.

There's a local hotshot tech here that can do stuff with pieces. I had him reface my metal Link a coupla weeks ago. Didn't change anything, per se; just made it a bit more responsive.

Anyhow, Nancy Wilson featured JJ Johnson today! Damn. That dude is phenomenal. Next week she's featuring Wayne Shorter.

I might have to hit you up for that tech's name after while. What Link you play?

JVW did an alto Meyer and a bari Runyon for me. Great work.

STM metal; 20+ years old. Damn thing measures .200+, supposed to be .115.
My man down here measured it. But, tell ya the truth, I'm going to get a second opinion; he measured my Dukoff D6 and got .200+ too; his tool only goes up to .200. I knew Links were notorious for being inconsistent, but, that's ridiculous(if true).
The guy's got credentials up the wazoo.

[I'll let you know what's happening after I get the 2nd opinion.]

BTW: Have you ever had Jeff Smith tweak your horn(s)?

Jeff did my bari once, Harold overhauled it. I like 'em both a lot.

My bari link's a Master Link. the guy who sold it to me online told me it was a Florida link. I came out ahead on that one. It was originally a 3*, whatever facing that was, and it's now a .105. Whoever refaced it was in Seattle and was supposed to be excellent but he's dead now too. Geez.
Which sucks because I kinda want a baffled link - supposedly Hawkins, Coltrane, a couple of others had theirs with a baffle built in so you'd have a big chamber and that warmth but some more edge. But that was on tenor. Which I really miss. I'm gonna have a tenor setup like that when I'm not as poor - probably with a Martin or King from the 40s.

The more recent Links, depending on whenever Babbitt (?) bought them out, started to be more mass produced like the Dukoffs (same manufacturer, now). So they could have a pretty wide variance. I dunno what vintage that woulda been, though.

Yeah, supposedly Sonny Rollins played a .170 on Berg and that's way too big for anything I could ever think of. I'd have no control. So .200 would be freakish.

It's amazing how much crap you can learn online. And I probably need to register at the new SOTW so I can stop babbling on like this.

Yep. SOTW is very cool. There's a lot of kids over there right now, but, that's ok.

Prior to this Link, I used the D6 for 20+ years and was very used to the small chamber and high baffle. So, I built up the baffle in the Link [sorta as a link(no pun intended)] using dental wax that I got at Walmart. I did this because the altissimo is more difficult with the Link, at least when first starting out. Anyhow, I took the wax out after a coupla weeks, worked on the range, now it's as responsive as with the dukkie, except w/more body(all over the horn). [I favor the dark sound, also.]

yeah, warm's good. It fits the horn. Usually I wanna go brighter to please people but it's just not me.

The Dukoff was bright that way. I liked the sound but with the old horn it wouldn't stay in tune. Same for the Berg that worked so well on the Yamaha. The Lawton has the bigger chamber and gave the power I thought the Runyon would. Just so damn expensive.

    Reminder:

Nancy Wilson will feature Wayne Shorter today at 3:00 pm on npr
(at least on WFSS in Fayetteville).
Wayne Shorter was with Miles Davis' outstanding group of the 60s, along with Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams. Later he co-lead Weather Report with Joe Zawinul(sp).
