South Carolina transfer drops out of classes|
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Jason Parker, the former high school All-American who enrolled at South Carolina last fall, is no longer attending classes after failing to complete his school work last semester.
South Carolina coach Dave Odom said the former Kentucky star didn’t enroll in spring classes because he didn’t finish his fall academic work.
‘‘The university feels it is best that Jason concentrate totally on finishing that work before he be allowed to continue as a student here,’’ Odom said.
Odom said he didn’t know whether Parker — a 6-foot-8, 255-pound forward who made the SEC’s all-freshman team in 2000-01 by averaging nearly nine points and five rebounds — would return to South Carolina. Parker would not be eligible to play next season even if he re-enrolled.
‘‘It’s unfortunate,’’ Odom said. ‘‘He’s tried. He really has.’’
Parker came to South Carolina in August, a transfer approved by University President Andrew Sorensen. But Odom said in January that Parker may not have met the academic requirements placed on him as part of his acceptance.
Parker is sitting out this season after his dismissal by Kentucky coach Tubby Smith in September. Neither Kentucky officials nor Odom has said why Parker was released.

Such a waste of God-given talent. His handler (father) really messed him up for college.

We would've had him if Gut hadn't caught so much flack about not recruiting the best NC player then. I heard Lutz speak at several alumni functions saying his father was a real pain to deal with, thinking his son was the second coming. (In defense of Mr. Parker, he's not the only person that often has wrongly influenced a promising player.) Charlotte never had the scholarship to offer him after the Kentucky mess. Parker did contact Bobby and meet with several occasions. Lutz at that point just wanted to help him make the right decision which now looks like a meaningless one.

And if he truly is a head case, the 49ers were just as well off without him. In the words of former UNCC coach Mike Pratt, "No high school player was ever as good going into college as his press clippings."
