Thomas Jefferson’s last project was the design of and the overseeing of the construction of the University of Virginia. He was in his eighties and as the pain of old age crept in, he anesthetized the pain with opium, no prescription necessary. Not at all unusual for the time. Did he fuck up? Do you know what would have happened had some anti-drug zealot put iron handcuffs on him then? They would have put a big wooden cuff around the zealot’s neck and put him on display so the little boys and girls could laugh at him and pinch his nose.

The properties of drugs do not change over time; the politics change and the persecutions change. William Bennett once said that drug dealers should be beheaded. He did not specify what drug dealers, but one can only assume he did not mean the vendors of the drugs we see in the isles of a drug store nor the toxic drugs such as Ritalin, which the government has a history of shoving down the throats of school children.

Welcome to the new America, no longer republic nor democracy, but parmacracy. You cannot take some drugs but you must take others.

He also owned slaves. Are you advocating we return to that being OK too?

    Times change. Deal with it.

Come on Tommy! There is a difference, some drugs are legal (OTC), some are legal only with a prescription and some are simply illegal by the laws your elected officals decided upon. I, for one, am a person who takes 7 different drugs daily for heart, cholesterol and and mental conditions, all medically prescribed and all legal. I have been on blood pressure medication since I was 19 and have had 2 heart attacks by age 42. I would not have the quality of life I currently have without the legal drugs I have now.

Is pot that bad of a drug? In the views of today's society, probably not. However, it is still illegal by the laws currently on the books.

JamesOn's high school basketball career is over. Nothing is going to change that. And hopefully with views such as yours, the crime of rape will never become legal. I'd hate to see what you might do if it happened to your wife or daughter.

dude, are you related to him or something? why do you keep defending him? I'm a huge Carolina fan, and WANTED him to come, but hell, I dont want a drug dealing, drug addict on my team, I would rather suck like we are right now. I dont know if you have any kids, but imagine if he just so happend partied with your child and your child took ecstacy and drank that night and was killed or raped, or anything. Its illegal, just because he's a standout, doesn't mean the full affect of the law shouldn't be taken out on him. Face it, he's guilty, and has ruined his life. Roy wont bring him on, and he has no future. quit beating a dead horse.

Just like I said, the drug war is based on hysteria and lies. It is hysterical to compare possession or even sale of a plant to rape. And it is a big fat lie to imply that I would think rape should be legal. Truly one of the cheapest things I have ever seen written in the many years I have participated in internet discussions.

Well, should alcohol be prohibited? Bad things can happen when people drink alcohol to excess.

I'm wondering what is more absurd, your question or your suggestion. Are you suggesting that I deal with any change, good or bad, and keep my mouth shut like a good little subject, no matter how tyrannical things may get?

What the hell are you talking about?

The basis for your argument is that opium was legal then. I pointed out that so was slavery. Both are no longer legal. Lots of things have changed in 225 years.

I would also suggest that you read the Federalist papers.
