It was the first of three touchdown passes against cornerback Jacoby Watkins, who also had a first-half pass-interference penalty. Watkins, however, maintained that the Tar Heels were step-for-step with FSU.

"We can play with these guys," he said. "We just have to get a few more mental mistakes fixed."

    uh...unc was a combined 0-for-12 on 3rd- and 4th-down conversions saturday.

    check yoself, jacoby.

As regards to total yards the Tar Heels did hang with the Seminoles for the better part of 3 quarters. The reason the game wasn't any closer after 3 was because of the Tar Heels inability to convert on 3rd down (that and it took Bowden a while to remember he had a running game).

Had 2 scoring drives of close to 80 yards in the first half without converting 3 downs, that's getting the job done on the first 2.

Florida State is a better team. No arguments, but stastically the Tar Heels did play with them for 3 quarters.

either you play with a team for 60 minutes, or you don't. that's my point.

it's not like it was fantastic game-planning on UNC's part -- fsu missed tackles left and right. i fault that to taking UNC too lightly based on history. you can't prepare for games thinking that it'll be a cakewalk. you need to prepare for unc as if they were florida. and fsu didn't do that.

I'm sure part of it was that. I'm sure FSU did overlook them a bit. I'm just saying that your initial quote, if taken in context, doesn't really say that UNC should have won the game.

I just took it as a player that realized there were some things that, if done a little more effectivly (red zone td's, not throwing that int late in the first half (go into the half down only 8), third down conversions, ect.) the game could have been much closer. And I don't think that's incorrect.

And when you're us Larry, we brag about being able to play with teams for 35 minutes :xyzthumbs . Small steps.

i know -- we did the same thing in basketball. being ranked all season was a great thing. now, it's checking each week to see if we've cracked the top 25 -- and that's big.
