hey VP, read that espn article from Patti. It basically says everything I told you about Grady (the overachieving of players, the eye for talent, the ability to deal with superstars, and the new pitching coach making it difficult to say when pitchers are tired). Boston made a mistake. I am glad he is out of there however, nobody will ever be good enough for those fans.

Suprise, suprise - everyone on this board criticizes that bonehead move and you lay it all at my feet. That's funny. And predictable.

Any way, I had already read it, and I totally disagree with it. I have said, on many occasions even before all of this happened, that Grady deserved some props for getting that clubhouse to play as a team - which is no mean accomplishment because I think that there are plenty in the Boston press who would prefer that the Red Sox fail so that they can write about it.

But Grady's game management was questionable at best all year. Just curious, but did you watch them night in, night out? I did. I know that you know the guy, but that doesn't make him a god.

He fucked up - bad. Captain of the Titanic bad, Exxon Valdez bad. Hey, what's this button do? bad. And you know the worst part - there wasn't but 2 people in that stadium - or watching on tv was screaming at him to turn around and go back to the mound and get Pedro the fuck out of that game.

And I am just curious how can you praise him for his great eye for talent (I am sure Theo Epstein deserves none of the credit) AND praise him for helping get the players to overachieve. It would seem to me if Mr. Wonderful had such a great eye, he would pick players that didn't need to overachieve.....

The bottom line - whether you like it or not - is that the 2 management styles did not mesh at all. Epstein wants to follow the Billy Beane model and use stats more when making decisions and Grady wanted to use his gut.

BTW, I am not totally sold on sabermetrics - I think it has it's place, but should not be the only tool used.
