Charlotte 49ers Center Martin Iti To Return To 49ers For Sophomore Year

Charlotte, N.C. -- In an effort to put an end to various speculation and rumors, Charlotte 49ers rising sophomore Martin Iti (Sydney, Australia) has confirmed that he will return to the team for his sophomore season.

“We have a great team at Charlotte and I look forward to a lot of victories with my teammates. I can’t wait to play at Halton Arena in front of our great fans, again. My freshman year was a learning experience and I am ready to contribute more as a sophomore," Iti said. "This has been a valuable summer for my basketball career. I know I will be a better player because of my experiences and workouts.”

“I am confident Martin is ready for the challenges ahead of him, both individually and as a part of our team,” said 49ers head coach Bobby Lutz. “We will work with him, as we do all of our players, to insure individual development and team success.”

Iti, a 7-0 center, initially declared for the NBA Draft but withdrew prior to the June 17th deadline. He did participate in the NBA’s pre-draft camp in Chicago.

“I know Charlotte will allow me to develop to my full potential and reach my goals of playing professional basketball while competing for championships,” Iti added.

A Conference USA all-Freshman team selection, last year, Iti averaged 6.0 points and 4.7 rebounds. He led the 49ers with 35 blocked shots and 37 dunks while shooting .569 from the floor. He started 23 of the 49ers 30 games, helping Charlotte claim a share of the C-USA regular-season title and notch their fourth NCAA bid in the last six years. He scored in double figures four times and pulled double-digit rebounds three times while averaging 18.4 minutes per game.

Prior to joining the 49ers, Iti, a Top 10 national prospect, was selected as the nation’s top post prospect by ESPN.com.

What on earth made a guy who averaged 6 pts a game at UNCC think he could play in the NBA?
