it be allright with me if they had no music at all and just teach me, but hey it is like a rule or sumptin that they have to play like 30 minutes of songs. so, if they have to, why do it half ass, hey, the songs are to praise God, don't he deserve better? Did whatshername not get the good oil to do Jesus' feet? so, why the music with no feeling that is suppose to be there to praise God? see what i'm shootin' ya with?

No, but I am going to ask our minister to do his next sermon in jive :xyzthumbs

Might help with the whole mixed church issue.

I think different types of music are appropriate for different congregations. Solemn music may be more appropriate in some places.

I am trying to picture my preacher, preaching in jive

Whether he just likes listening to African American gospel, or whether he's actually worshipping, that statement is true. You don't have to be in church to experience that. Of course, you don't have to be in church if you're just there for the sermon, either. Some of the best preaching I've ever heard has been on the radio and the internet.

That is true. I am just disturbed by the churches I have been to that seem to relegate preaching to a short pep talk and focus on music.

I agree there's a bit of a methodology (for lack of a better term) of entertainment value and preaching with kid gloves to produce big attendance numbers permeating many churches today, and the alarming thing is that it's working to fulfill its goal. Obviously it falls far short of what the church's goal should be, which is making fully devoted followers of Christ. I don't think it's reached epidemic proportions yet, though.

Good question.. because I go to a Church that I love so much! But i'm not too excited with the music selections or the hymnals.. sometimes I go late so that I don't have to participate..

I grew up in an all black church and was in a great gospel choir.. but the sermons weren't that great and the church was all about showing off and people gossiping.. etc.

I'm happy where i'm at now, but don't really like the music.. so great question and I wish I knew the answer.. i've never told anyone this either. lol

I do not know that it has reached epidemic proportions but it is happening a lot. There is a church in my area that uses this approach. I know it first hand because I have visited it and a close friend of mine goes there. They have great music and pep talk sermons and they fill the huge sancutary twice on sunday mornings to accomodate everyone. I am not sure if half the people who go there really know why Jesus died on the cross or what that has to do with them though.
