Agreed, but that isn't unique to hymns. There is a lot of good contemporary woship music out there now that can be used to compliment sermons, and should.

I think that depends on the church. A lot of older people do not care for contemporary music. I know my dad is very much opposed to it.

I am not opposed to it but it seems to go more with weak preaching than traditional music does.

Just curious -- how often do you leave that church feeling convicted?

Why not? If you like your church, why wouldn't you want to share it?

I definitely agree that the music should fit the congregation. Music is a catalyst for worship. Old or new, if it's distracting, it's lost its purpose.

I do not want to name churches I have been to that fall into that catagorey I described as lacking substance for fear of offending someone who goes there. As for the church I am going to now I am not a member and would not want anyone to judge the church based on me.

i've only been to two churches, both are baptist churches. I CAN NOT stand the music! I LOATHE it, I DESPISE it! not the song but how these white folks do it. They suck!! it be alright, and i guess i could make it through if they would just let you sit there and listen but NO! they make you stand up, and READ the words on the projector while the music is playing. Yeah, you are suppose to be singing but it is just so bland! it's whiter than builder!
i usually just pretend i'm singing or my uncle will nudge me and give me the look to start singing. I don't like being forced to do something that gives me no feeling whatsoever, i feel fake and i just can't wait till the music part is over.

i watch some black churches on tv and they really know how to do it! they really get into it! i think it brings the people of the church closer together, it's like they can feel it. I dunno know, i think thelt just can't understand what music means to people.

Do you hear a good sermon when you go? Do you learn something about the bible?

I am not opposed to music but if you are only attending church so you can sing and "get into" the music then you are really not doing anything you could not do by listening to a CD or going to a nightclub.

i don't know if i hear a good sermon or not. i have only been to a church like 5 times. the last time i was at my uncle's church, the preacher talked about yoke and not being with people who don;t believe in God, i really didn't understand it cause Jesus hung out with those type people. but i've watched Michael Yousseff, Adrian Rogers and David Jeremiah and T.D. Jakes and now i know what the preacher meant about yoke. i thought he was talking about eggs but it means you shouldn't marry a person who don't believe cause you are both pulling in different directions instead of working as one.

The other sermon was at a church here and it was at Easter.
I learn the most about the bible from those preachers i told you about on tv and radio and from reading. I would love to go to a church with one of them as the preacher. and T.D. Jakes is probably my ultimate favorite. i love the way he explains stuff and he gets everyone involved and it's easy for me to understand and easy to remember long after i watched him.

The yoke thing was probably about how non-believers and believers should not marry. That is probably sound advice whether you believe in the bible or not.

I have heard of Adrian Rogers, he is supposed to be good.

I am probably coming off as anti-music in this thread but I do not mean to. I do though believe that the sermon is much more important than the music. If you study the bible you see that God always sent preachers to spread His word not musicians.
