    anybody who might know -
ipod Touch came out last fall.

They updated in January with a new download pack that gives you mail, a map program that essentially does what google maps does, weather, and movie rentals from their store. And 802.11 authentication so you can rip wi-fi from more places.

Alternately, you can 'jailbreak' the Touch to add non-approved apps if you don't upgrade to new software (whether you upgrade an older Touch with the new mail, etc apps or not).

Anybody know if there's anything else you're getting, or missing, with the difference? Amazon, for instance, sells units from before the upgrade for $40 less than the brand new ones. The update, on iTunes, is $20. So, if I could pull off an old unit for the $30-40 that old ones are going cheaper, I have to guess that the upgrade if I wanted it wouldn't be that big a deal, and I could just pop up to it if I needed.

The whole thing was botched by Apple since they're charging $20 to give a limited functionality to a unit that's in theory the exact same platform as the iPhone, but didn't do the more basic things in Apps that the iPhone does - and then would charge you $20 to make it do that limited difference. Jobs got booed for it on stage, I'd read.

I really can't find much of an answer online as far as whether to buy an older one or newer one, so I figured I'd run it past y'all. All units would be new.

Basically, I'm trying to see if anyone knows about this situation that'll say it's OK to buy a pre-January update unit.

ha. OK, so 2.0 comes out and the new Touch is better than the old one, but not by a ton, and of course it's cheaper (but I got a deal on mine so it's about break even for a 16 and I didn't wait the six months to get into it.

Didn't buy the update, and so now the 2.0 update for the 1.0, is half the price of the previous app/mail/map update, and gives the other functionalities of the new units.

Besides the idea that software updates cost, which is silly (and not applicable to the same exact application to the iPhone), it's the idea that ground floor users would end up having to have paid $30 to get the same thing I'll get for $9.99 - or rip off, since that's possible too. But people pay it without hesitation, and apparently at least once a year for a unit that already cost them a bunch.
