If things were as they are today, I'd say you'd see an increase in Apple sales. Unless it is actually a 4G capable phone, most of them would be existing iPhone users migrating to get away from AT&T. There will be some portion of Verizon users that will switch just because it's available. As for Android, they'll be rolling out Android 3.0, which is called "Gingerbread", in the next month or so. I would not be surprised to see a 4g speed capable Android phone released for Verizon over the Holidays. Sprint already has 2 out now.

I just read today that Verizon is now selling iPads in their stores now.

Again, more proof that Apple needs Verizon.

or to quote, "The numbers clearly suggest that Apple and AT&T have almost fully saturated the market for the iPhone and majority of the new users are those, who are upgrading from past iPhones."

Does Apple have a buyout clause? Is there a deal breaker if AT&T can't deliver a certain amount of customers?

Apple just had a $20 BILLION quarter. I'd say it is doing all right with or without Verizon.

But that is after the release of the iPhone4G. Being that they won't put out a new iPhone every quarter and the people that upgrade will not have to pay full price or not upgrade again based on the 2 year contract scenario, it is unlikely that their phone sales will repeat. By remaining on AT&T exclusively, they have to compete with Android for AT&T customers, while not able to compete with Android on any other network.

With Verizon's 70 million customers, that would dramatically decreases their market saturation for phone sales. Verizon also added more new customers than AT&T last quarter which means Verizon doesn't really need Apple to continue growth. A CDMA iPhone would make it usable on Verizon and Sprint, both carriers are building 4G networks instead of AT&Ts substandard 3G network.

I was really looking for data on how many iPhone 4 sales went to previous iPhone users vs people coming to the iPhone from different devices. That would be a telling statistic of market saturation.

Interesting link: The sim card slot would be for LTE. LTE(4G tech which Verizon will employ) is a GSM derivative and will require a sim card. The 4G Sprint uses (WiMax is a CDMA derivative) will not require a sim card. Although a sim card could be required for international use.

I totally agree going to Verizon will help Apple, but I also think Apple would survive without Verizon. Of course, both will do whatever makes them the most money.
