Peete’s locker-room presence helped Panthers improve

    Carolina

The Panthers are lucky to have Rodney Peete. That’s the feeling around the team’s locker room, and we’re told that Peete’s calm presence this season did wonders for a team that has seen more than its share of adversity. The veteran quarterback has been decent on the field, but his fire in the huddle and his classy manner has rubbed off on other players with the team. Last year, the Panthers really missed a calm presence and allowed losses to snowball until the team finished with a 1-15 record. Peete, however, has tried to look for the positive in every game, and it kept the Panthers from getting too low after each loss. We’re also told that Peete’s influence on WR Steve Smith has helped the volatile receiver’s development as a No. 2 man progress faster than expected. Head coach John Fox and the Panthers’ front office are expected to shake things up at the QB position during the offseason, but general manger Marty Hurney told PFW that Peete isn’t going anywhere. "Rodney has played well for us and has really been a leader," Hurney said. "We have to really evaluate our two young quarterbacks (Chris Weinke and Randy Fasani), and then we have to figure out how we are going to mix whoever is here and come up with three quarterbacks."

If I was gonna keep one of the 3, it'd be Peete.

keep Peete until he retires and make him QB coach... we don't have one... why not a long term vet that played for us

Saw that yesterday, too. Sounds like Weinke and Fasani are gone. How much longer do they really need to evaluate?

I can accept Rodney here. I don't think he can stay healthy through the year, but he's a quality backup, as opposed to the sucky backups behind him now.

Yeah. It's not as clear as I'd like. My digital camera software won't take it down to 100 pixels, so I use a pix software I've had for a while. But sometimes it fucks up the clarity.

I agree 100%. Peete has been the sole bright spot on offense in 2002. Granted, he was more candle than star, but he did bring some good things to the table. I'd like him to be a Panther in 2003, but I want to see a good FA get signed and beat him out, fair and square -- not just because he got a fatter contract.
