this may have been reported over in cusaland, but its news to me. we have hired former NCAA president Cedric W. Dempsey (I think that is his name) to be a consultant on the new conference reallignment and how the 49ers should handle it. He finished the NCAA post last December, I think. This guy will head us in the proper direction.

I also learned that it looks like everything is hinging on Notre Dame. They are looking at starting their own conference for non football sports! Notre Dame needs to decide if they are gonna stay independent in football and which conference their other sports will play in before the ball begins to roll. As of now ND could play thier olympic sports in the ACC, Big Ten, Big East, or their own NEW conference....which we would love to be in. It also sounds like there is NO way we will entertain the A10 without Temple and UMASS still there.

Good news all the way around!

As I've stated before here, scheduling and travel for sports other than basketball must be taken into account when considering a new conference affiliation.

So what are the likely conference options at this point?

Metro, where did you hear that ND is still trying to decide? My impression was that they intend to stay with the Big East for all non-football sports.

As for the A-10, don't you guys want Xavier to remain there as well? Or could you care less about them? If A-10 is option 1 for you guys, you'd better insist on the deletion of Fordham/St. Bonnie, as well. However, I'm not familiar with the logistics needed for the A-10 to boot teams.

bj, I can't devulge where I heard it. Like I said, at this point, ND is considering forming their own league and Charlotte would love to be in it. The reason I left out X, was I am assuming they leave for the B.E. We would only go A-10 if 2 of the big 3 (umass, temple, x) stay, from what I understood. And yes, the A10 is looking at the possibility to boot the lower teir teams like Fordam, St Bonnies, etc. In other words, UNCC refuses to play for a depleted A-10, which we all fear.

    I hear you :D

The reason I thought ND was staying in the BE is because the prevailing opinion is that they are the lynchpin holding the football and basketball factions together.

Anyway, ND's forming a new league is certainly interesting news I hadn't heard. Thanks for the tidbits...

Wow!! Metro I hope you are right. That would be the best case scenario I could think of. Most of the news I have heard has been negative even as recent as this past Wednesday (a stretch for even the A-10).

Charlotte is such a tough fit. Southern, non football, non private Catholic, playing in a market that most of the time makes it 5th fiddle (NC big 4 first).

I just saw this and figured I'd throw it into the mix. Nothing really new.
