I'm trying to decipher what is learned and what is instinct. Are they the same thing?

you mean babies are as helpless in the water as they are on dry land? no, they can't do laps and climb into and out of a pool. if left alone, they would drown. but they're way better in the water than makes sense for a non-aquatic animal.

I'm still trying to get over the immage of putting a bunch of babies underwater to see if they hold theor breath. And the reaction of some of teh mothers. I'm sorry - but it's just too funny.

And I know that they function better in water, but that is just a function of pure physics than anything else. It requires less force to propel somethign in water than it does on land. Plus, you do have to remember that they are in a water filled environment for the first 9 months of their lives.

No. Learned behavior is not instinctual. Thik reading - or math. Instinctual behavior is hard coded. Sucking to get milk or crying when hungry would be some.

But you agree there are instincts. Great, I agree. I also know that the genes that pass along instincts are seperate than the ones the cause the physical changes that require instinctive knowledge. Example. Hunting food. Instinctive. The genes that pass along that knowledge are seperate from the genes that cause canines to grow. So canines would have been an adaptive liability unless they developed at the same time as the instinct genes. In other words, the mutations would have had to have knowledge of each other somehow. Epigenesis. Evolution cannot explain epigenesis.

How can they do better in the water when they are the only ones that can't swim?

Yeah, I know about actual 'learning' but the lines seem to get fuzzy on a few things. You instinctivly move your hand off the hot stove because you have learned it burns.

I would say you instictively move it off because you know it hurts. Based on it hurting, you eventually learn maybe you shouldn't put your hand on a hot stove.

Is hunting food instinctive or learned? You learn a lot by just observing. Are we talking humans or lower animals? Wild animals teach their young to hunt.
