It's been several years since I've built a computer and I'm starting to get an itch to build another one. For some of my larger projects my macbook pro just isnt cutting it. I'm wanting something that can handle pretty large video files (~20 minutes at HD resolution) as well as some 3d animation.

I'll be running OSX and CS4 on it. If it doesnt add too much complexity, I might even consider doing a dual boot with Windows, but that'd only be for some occasional gaming, all my "work" software is for Mac.

Can anyone suggest some hardware for me? I'm totally out of the loop on processor technology for the last few years.

from what I've read, in order to install OSX it has to be Intel.

well, if osx is a key factor in this, i would probably just buy a mac. you're paying a premium, but it's probably worth it.

you can't just install osx like windows -- it has to be a mac for the osx installer to work (there's a hardware id on mac mb's). you'll have to find some means to getting osx onto your pc (ie, a cracked copy) or some kind of dev disk.

also, because apple controls the hardware, they don't really bother with support for every piece of pc hardware that might exist.

there are hardware compatibility lists and general info on getting osx onto a pc in those pages. i tried it once ages ago and it caused some serious problems for me (f'd up my raid array when it wanted to format and install). maybe things are better now -- that was a few years ago.
