Anyone know much about it? Is it always a precursor to diabetes? Can it cause you to be overweight?

I'm guessing yes on the weight thing, but it's just that.
Diabetes is so confusing to me. Even when I had gestational diabetes I didn't understand how it all worked. Sometimes you could have sweets, sometimes not, sometimes bread, sometimes not, sometimes you HAD to eat sweets.... Damn.

I hope someone knows more about it and will share, I've never read up on it much nor paid much attention when people talk about it.

Most type II diabetics are diabetic because of insulin resistence.

Look at it like this.... diabetes is caused by the pancreas' inability to make enough (or any) insulin. With insulin resistence, the pancreas is able to make the insulin, but the insulin is not able to get into the cells of the body and be put to use. Therefore, the blood sugar rises.

Weight control is the best way to prevent insulin resistence.

My blood sugar is normal, always has been as far as I know, but my doctor thinks I am insulin resistant. Being overweight and having high cholesterol makes him think this. He has prescribed Metformin for me. I have only been on it a few days but I think I can tell a difference. It is like my blood sugar bottoms out much quicker than before and I can not go as long without eating.

He says it will help me lose weight and prevent the onset of diabetes if I stay on the meds.

sounds to me like your doc has stock in the company that makes Metformin.

Why put someone on an oral diabetic pill when their sugar is normal when it's gonna make your sugar stay low and make you feel like shit all the time?

    Unless he's an endrocrinologist, I'd get a 2nd opinion.

Or.... just wait till you're at work one day when your sugar hits 30 and you pass out and they carry you off to the ER.

Metformin is one of the diabetic pills they put my grandfather on. He's on two but i forget the name of the other one. they warned him to keep some candy or orange juice handy in case his sugar goes too low.

why would you want to be on medication you don't need?

He says it is an "off label" use. It is supposed to help me lose weight. He drew some blood and did some tests and said I showed up positive for insulin resistance. I am not sure what my blood sugar was in his test but I have had it checked several times in the past and it has been fine. I have a strong family history of diabetes so if this might help prevent it I am game.

Thelt- it sounds like the man is a quack and pill-pusher. Try the old fashioned way to lose weight.... push away from the table and exercise and stop hoping a pill used for diabetes is gonna fix you.

    But, it's your body.

And when your endrocrine system is so fucked up you have to have parts of your feet amputated, I reserve the right to say "I told ya so."

I am going to the gym again now so I am working on it the old fashioned way too.

Can they check for insulin resistance with a blood test? I am wondering how he confirmed his diagnosis.

    No.

They can do a 2, 3 or 5 hour glucose tolerance test to see how your body reacts to sugar, but no test for insulin resistence.

Thelt, I've been a nurse for over 20 years and NEVER heard of someone being of an oral anti-diabetic agent unless they were diabetic.

GO TO AN ENDOCRONOLOGIST! Find someone you know with severe diabetes and ask them to refer you to a competent one.
