Former Duke player Shavlik Randolph is expected to sign a free-agent contract with the Philadelphia 76ers when the NBA moratorium on signing those contracts passes early next week, Randolph's agent, Joel Bell, confirmed Wednesday.
Bell declined to discuss financial terms of the deal. Bell was hired by Randolph two weeks ago, according to Randolph's father, Kenny.

A 76ers spokesman said Wednesday that team personnel could not comment on any free-agent signings until the NBA-imposed moratorium was lifted.

The NBA had originally set July 22 as the first day free- agent contracts can be signed. It has since extended it twice, first to today and, most recently, to next week. The league and NBA Players' Association have needed the extra time to finalize and sign the written version of the league's new collective bargaining agreement.

Randolph, who has been living in Philadelphia for the past month, could not be reached for comment. He will next attend summer training sessions with other Philadelphia players in Las Vegas starting on Sunday.

In general, NBA free-agent contracts can include, for example, guaranteed money for attending training camp with additional salary for making the team.

Making the team is the next hurdle for Randolph, who was not drafted in June. There were 54 undrafted players out of 414 on NBA rosters in 2004-05, including 35 forwards or post players.

Back in June , when he worked out for the Charlotte Bobcats, Randolph said his size, skill and the quickness he added after dropping about 15 pounds had impressed NBA teams.

The 6-foot-10 Randolph decided to skip his senior season at Duke in May. After going undrafted on June 28, he was invited to work out with the 76ers in early July.

Randolph could have returned to Duke after not being drafted since he had not yet hired an agent. But Randolph said in May that it was unlikely he would exercise that option. It became a moot point two weeks ago when he officially hired Bell.

"They were going to be doing a contract with the 76ers in the near future and they asked me to look over the details and work things out," said Bell, who runs Bell Management International outside of Washington, D.C. "They asked me to represent him and I agreed."

Ironically, the first part of camp will be held at Randolph's old home in Cameron Indoor Stadium from Oct 4-10.

It is the second year in a row that Philadelphia will be using the Duke facilities. Sixers general manager Billy King starred for the Blue Devils in the 1980s.

If anybody here is a stupid enough bastard to think Shav will be an NBA player, then I would like to sell you the Brooklyn Bridge. Shav has about as much chance of being a 76'er than I would of being a Green Bay Packer. This is nothing but bullshit. Plain and simple.
