I'm just saying, chief, that I came up with that stuff on my own, in case someone here accused me of stealing the info. I actually think that streak is more impressive than the current Sweet 16 streak. To me it shows that while the games initially might have seemed to be an upset (see OU-UNC 89?), they really weren't. Basketball is a simple sport, usually comes down to who has the best player on the court, even in single elimination. That UNC team had Rick Fox, for instance.

Now, 99 UConn/Duke, you can argue who had the best player, Brand or Rip. But up until this year Rip won that argument in most people's minds.

What years were those? Doesn't really mean as much when you only have to win one game to get to the sweet 16 does it?

Streak began in '81 so 4 of those years were smaller fields than the current bracket.

    Field sizes
    1980-1982: 48 teams
1983: 52 teams (two play-in games before the tournament)
    1984: 53 teams
1985-2000: 64 teams (in 1991 three play-in games before the tournament)

Just want to point out that the 8/5 rule was never in effect during those years.

True, a few if's here and there, and UNC would have 10 more titles!

    Doesn't really matter!

Didn't UNC make 16 Sweet 16s in a row or something???

I thought I remember the streak ending when Guthridge or Daughtery was the coach?

It was 13, already covered in the thread. Streak ended in 94 against Boston College as defending champs.

edit--god I know too much about UNC hoops, it's sick. I might as well make them my number 2 team :banginghe
