I'd love to have Holcomb here too but earlier this year the Browns locked him up with a pretty fat contract extension. He will be Couchs long-term backup and we would not be able to even get a whiff of guys like Holcomb or Bulger without paying a Gilbert-like price. We could have King and he would clearly be an improvement over what we've got.
I agree with everyone that says we need to trade down and skip gambling our future and TONS of guaranteed cash on a 1st round QB. I also agree with magnus that it does seem highly unlikely that we will find anyone willing to pay to move up to the top 3. We are probably just going to have to take the picks we have unless we want to swap #1s for a 3rd, or their 2nd for our extra 4th or something.
Maybe it would be the best option to just take one of the stud WRs or even DTs. By all accounts Joseph and Kennedy are as close to a “sure thing” as there is in this draft. One of them would make us forget about Gilbert and be the final ingredient to a very solid D-line. If we take the top WR (Rogers or Williams?) then we will also have a guy who can contribute right away in an area of need. It’s just all that top 3 money that will suck so hard on our cap for the next 7 years or so. It will no doubt be very poor value when we could probably get a guy at either position in round 2 for a fraction of the cost who would be so close to the same quality as a player.

King is used to playing in a boring offense. He'd be a perfect fit.

The thing I remember most about King is the Bucs Rams game on MNF in 2000.

My memory was that he was spectacular. I've never thought that about Plummer.

I worry Gruden will try to keep him, but I think King would rather go someplace he could start. Like here.

I've been saying King would be a good fit for this offense all year. Unfortunately or should I say fortunately, this offense will be greatly changed next year when Hennings gets FORCED into retirement.

I wouldn't mind King as a stopgap to give our #1 pick time to develop. But by no means would I want him as our permanant starter. He's just too limited. I see him as just a "don't make mistakes" kind of QB, and I am of the mind that we need someone with more ability to take over if he has to.

by the way, I am anti-Plummer too. He's mediocre at best unless the play breaks down. He's just plays too carelessly for my tastes.

That's the problem with this years crop of FA QB's, none of them have proven to be capable of leading a team on a consistent basis. You have either former starters that are aging or not able to lead a team. Or you have career back-ups that have yet to show they even deserve a chance at a starters spot. It's possible that some of these guys could pull a Bulger and shine if given an opportunity, but unfortunately, there is nothing but faith to base that on. So I prefer to focus on an early round QB in the draft and a mid-level FA to manage the team until he is ready to take over.

The only real knock on King was arm strength. He was respected by MOST of his team mates (Me-shawn excluded, becuase he didn't throw him the damn ball enough...but could anybody?) he was consistent, and he didn't make big mistakes to cost his team games. He just doesn't have a big WOW factor, which isn't necessary for the kind of offense Fox envisions.

The other was his work ethic. He doesn't put the time in.
