    That's a fine looking kit; must be quality too, because it's not all that big(for 5 grand).

    I don't know much about drum brands. But, seems like Gretsch had fallen out of favor, so to speak, and are on the return. I remember that Roy Haynes and Elvin Jones used Gretsch back in the '60s, they can damn well make music! They, Jack DeJohnette, Billy Higgins(rip), Jeff Tain Watts are my current favorites.

    {You play on a level stage?:D }

    Gretsch is back with a vengence. Once they got Vinnie Colaiuta on board as an endorser, their newer lines have taken off. They have a 120th Anniversary jazz bop kit (4-piece) that retails for $4,500. The best brands currently available are high-end Gretsch, DW, Pearl Masters, Yamaha Maple Customs, Pork Pie, Spaun, Sonor, Noble and Cooley, and GMS, all of which have 5-piece kits without hardware that will set you back $4k or more. I've about $1,800 tied up in cymbals alone.

    Larry, you can do it! I started playing when I was 25 and that was 10 years ago. I highly recommend learning the rudiments as it will make it easier for you to gain limb independence as well as making it easier to flow around the kit doing fills. Let me know how serious you are and I'll hook you up with a plethora of killer drum sites and message boards.

    Nope. I was giving advice and then you came after my advice. You were never clear on what I "baited" you on and never really did much other than try to tell me I was wrong. I'm just trying to give him practical advice. My advice is just what's there, not inclusive of any assumptions or negations you may have brought to my argument.
    Oh and Larry, don't get scared off by all this $5000 talk, you aren't there yet.

    El Bastardo - that's a hell of a set. One of my boys plays Pork Pie exclusively and there's nothing sweeter to me - of course for large part because of the player. The greatest instruments still need to be played. But you've got a damn fine set there, and I like a good variety of stuff on a set too. As far as skill in different situations, we can all sit there and bark about our own personal favorite being most skilled, each of them takes incredible talent to be amongst the best and even to be competent. So I'll leave it at that. I kinda prefer my big toms on the floor for independence, but since I lack much practical experience on drums I don't guess it matters.

    Mag, let's just say that what we got here is a failure to communicate, and let it go at that. OK?

    I can agree to that. You never really made it clear why you thought my advice was so gut-wrenching horrible, other than that it was me that said it.
