This conference set-up would suit me just fine.

Change the only certainty in Conference USA future

Possible reconfigurations of Conference USA/Big East for the 2005-06 academic year:

    Football/Basketball
    North Division
Boston College, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Syracuse, West Virginia
South Division East Carolina, Houston, Memphis, South Florida, Southern Miss, TCU, Tulane, UAB

Basketball Only (9 of 10 schools do not field D-I football teams)
Charlotte, DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Notre Dame, Providence, Saint Louis, Seton Hall, St. John's, Villanova

I'd be pleased with all this. However, it just almost seems too simple. Someone will mess this scenario up dramatically I believe before it all shakes out.

Some major thought is going to have to be paid to the non-revenue sports IMO. Travel expenses, etc will dictate how some of this ends up. For example, would Charlotte really want to go up in the New Endgland are for early spring baseball contests?

HP, not that baseball would dictate anything, but you are making a good point about the Non revenue sports. Here is a list of Big East baseball, and if we got into this "hoop only" scenario, the baseball would be non existant. In that case, only Charlotte, G-town, Nova, Seton Hall, St Johns, St Louis, and Nortre Dame would have teams. Then again, I think the Metro conference of 92-95 only had seven teams. (Charlotte, VCU, Va Tech, Tulane, USM, USF, and Louisville)

    current Big East Baseball:
    Rutgers # 19 6 0 .760 37 22 0 .627
    West Virginia 18 6 0 .750 36 19 0 .655
    Notre Dame $ 16 7 0 .696 45 18 0 .714
    Virginia Tech 15 10 0 .600 34 23 0 .596
    Boston College 13 11 0 .542 33 21 0 .611
    Pittsburgh 13 13 0 .500 36 20 0 .643
    St. John's 12 14 0 .462 29 27 0 .518
    Seton Hall 11 14 0 .440 22 24 0 .478
    Connecticut 10 15 0 .400 24 23 0 .511
    Villanova 6 19 0 .240 14 32 0 .304
    Georgetown

You think? Surely you remember and are sure. Only 7 teams, but I don't think any leagues left like that could survive, though they definitely do leave a lot of room for scheduling freedoms.

    austin,
what I meant was that it is a 10 member overall league for all sports "non football"

I was just saying that only 7 teams field baseball teams.

How many track teams would it have?

Hp makes a good point that just because it makes sense for Hoops, will they allow it to kill everything else travel wise and competition wise? I don't mind those 7 baseball teams, it would be a big step down, but good for our program overall.

Metro, I was jumping your case because you said "I think" in regards to the metro conference of 92-95. :D I would've thought you would KNOW.

Anyway, currently the Big East has 14 teams competing in both cross country and track both. Miami and VPI are 2 of those 14.

If you just look at the proposed 10-school non-football conference, all 10 schools have cross country and all but SLU have track (that would be 9 teams unless I am mistaken about SLU). Sufficient in size for both sports.
