Curious about what what reasons you would have to be upset about the 1993 title.

Dean won that one with as blue collar a team as he ever had. There wasn't a single superstar on that team. No thugs, no mal-contents. Just a bunch of hard workers that came together as a team. George Lynch was the only player to have what could be called a decent NBA career.

    Well, since you asked ;)

I always felt that Dean was a smug ass. Keep in mind this was knowledge I had from a biased source (my dad) and that I was at an impressionable age (17). Since I had started watching basketball, Duke had made the Final Four to lose. 86, lost, 88, lost, 89, lost, then in 1990 they got RUN. I had to put up with a lot of shit from UNC fans at school. I hated UNC, I thought Eric Montross was a goon. You remember when they beat Duke in 1992 and there was that stupid ass picture of Hienrik Rodl was on the front sports page of the Observer? I do. I couldn't stand UNC, and finally, Duke had a title. Then they had two. No UNC fan could say shit to me now, except about Michael Jordan and where he went to school. But those are all ancillary reasons to why I hated the 93 title. The main thing that bothers me is that Michigan was up five with a few min to go and self destructed. I tip my hat to Donald Williams, he was a fighter in that game. But the ending REALLY pissed me off, I almost would have preferred they just have called the travel. When you see a team in the final game not even get a shot off, it's just depressing. I won't say Carolina didn't deserve it, but when you combine that with what happened in 82, it just seemed convenient. And of course it comes right on the heels of Duke's titles.

I've since become a more balanced college basketball enthusiast, and I recognize a lot of what Dean Smith did and contributed to basketball. I still feel like he never gave Coach K enough credit, but I do know that he respects him (even if he didn't when he was coaching). I understand now that the four corners was an almost soccer-like strategy to spread the court to utilize Phil Ford one on one, and not a purely timewasting strategy. I understand that UNC, like Duke, has lost just as many games in the NCAA tourney that they should have won (unlike say Kentucky, who hasn't lost more than 1 or 2 final four games?). And as for the 2004 title not bothering me as much, I felt like those kids earned it. By that I don't mean that Illinois didn't throw the game away in the last seconds, I mean that I watched these kids struggle for two years in the ACC, and they earned it. So props. Enjoy the rest of the off-season, cause I'm already psyched about next year ;)

    well I'll be damned.

That may be one of the most level headed posts ever.

Not that I will ever buy the "UNC didn't earn the titles in 93 or 82" argument seeing as how they were the team in the lead when the other teanm fucked up.

I guess UCONN didn't deserve their title in 2001 since Langdon tripped over his shoe laces. NC State didn't deserve their title in 83 since Olajuwon stood there and watched Charles get the rebound.

Make the plays, get the lead, win the game. And EARN the title.

And as much as I respect your post I have no problem admitting I'll never give dook the same. I just can't do it. :umno:

Hate to tell ya, well not really, but they never caught UNC in National Championships.

Aside from that, I appreciate your last post, except about the not earning those two Championships. Part of winning and being the best is not choking when it counts. Does Georgetown or Michigan deserve to be National Champions in '82 and '93 respectively?

If you want to count the church league title that's your prerogative. I was talking about NCAA Championships :)

Surely if K doesn't have to count the I hurt my back year, we can count them all, I mean at least we aren't pulling a K.

Duke won the title in 2001. You're thinking of '99, and if Duke doesn't put up a new national championship banner after this year I will be pissed.

If dook doesn't win it all this year, that will be the biggest choke of all time. There isn't a team that comes clothes to good players and depth that dook has nationwide.

Isn't UCONN ranked ahead of them in the preseason polls? I think they made those before Charlie Villanueva decided to leave for the NBA though
