Why was GODFATHER III a good, but not great, movie?

Who do you blame . . . GIII was good don't get me wrong, but it wasn't as strong as I or II :( :( . . . Was it Sofia Coppola's crappy acting (she was rushed in at the last minute to play Michael Corleone's daughter . . I remember folks thought Madonna was going to get the role)? Or was it Francis Ford Coppola's so-so script that lessen it's impact as a great movie (I was really hoping to see it win Best Picture in 1991 . . . Who won the award that year ? ? ? ? ? ? ). There were some weak lines in the movie . . . Didn't he & Mario Puzo rush out a script out in Italy one summer back in 1989 (?) drinking lots of vino ? ? ?

Damn, what a way to start the day, with that "depressing" clip.

Sophia's bad acting certainly contributed to GF's non-greatness, but I think the script had more to do with it. Pacino was great in that scene!

Winona Ryder was cast, and she would have done much better in the role. Especially if she had gotten topless.

I forgot about that . . . . She had to drop out for some reason. Francis then had to cast Sofia at the last minute to be in the movie (she was in college at the time I think).

Sofia could've done better if Papa Coppola had done a better job directing her thinking about it some more. I mean, as father/daughter combo he should've encouraged her to act with Pacino/Keaton/Garcia in certain ways using past experiences as a guide (i.e. 'Hey Sofia, remember when _____________ happened between us at ___________ . You acted _______________ . . . . ). I think a better directing job by Francis could've made this film better, though GOODFELLAS should've gotten best picture that year :( :( . . How the hell DANCIN' WITH WOLVES win that year ? ? ? ?

BOTTOM LINE: Add 'So-So Directing' to reason B and that's the way I'm going to vote
