Ok i know there are a few of us dedicated Mets fans out there. All i have to say is why? I mean i can understand Alomar, and i can even understand Burnitz..but not happily. But benetiez(sp) I mean you give your save leader away. ok so he had blown a few saves but Franco is no where near what he used to be and now that means we will be using more pitchers than we need to. What is the management thinking

That this is a team of over the hill players or underachievers. They are thinking that they can be in last place with 500,000 a year players or 5,000,000 a year players - so why not save the money, check out the young talent, and build for the future.

It is a sound plan (see A's, Oakland, Twins, Minnesota, and Royal, Kansas City)

The Mets may very well be the worst team in the majors at this point.Maybe the Tigers will play them a series to determine who is the worst. From what I have seen from the Mets the last few nights my money would be on Detroit.

I think Fred Wilpon has finally realized that you can't just buy a team. The team the Mets are currently throwing out on the field everyday is a guaranteed loser. There is no true core to build on and no hope to create a penant winner with the few worthwhile pieces that they have. Their only hope is to build for the future. Alomar, Burnitz & Benitez were the first to go, because they're the few players that still have some value. I can't wait to see if they can find a sucker to take Roger Cedeno.
The future core of this team will begin with Phillips, Reyes (maybe Jeff Duncan) and the next crop of minor leaguers like Scott Kazmir. This is really the quickest way for them to get back to being a competitive team. Look at other big market teams that realized that you need to build a solid core before filling in the missing pieces with free agents like the Braves & Yankees (ick). I really think that the Mets are trying to follow their lead. But that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.....

How in the world could you leave Wiggonton off that list? He is leading rookies in almost every offensie category - and he seems to play hard everyday.

I dispise the Mets (Red Sox fan - nough said) but I like the Wiggonton plays teh game.

I like Wigginton too, and I think he's doing a great job, but he has utility player written all over him. He'll be fine at third until it comes time for them to contend.
By the way, the Mets are third on my depth chart of favorite teams, only because I'm a season ticket holder. I'm a Brave fan.

Especially when they are playing the Mets and the other teams in that weak division.Last year they win the division by 20 games and then get blown away in the 1st round of the playoffs.

It hurts you to play weak opponents so much during the regular season. It shows up each year when the Braves have to play a good team in the playoffs. They tear that division up for 12 straight years and then are usually a quick out in the playoffs.Expect the same thing this year.
